No water only steam is coming from my mercury 2.5 after going too shallow over Hayling mud. How do I sort this please?

Does the prop turn free? If so check the shear pin if that is OK try turning the prop shaft if that turns free you have broken something in teh gearbox or stripped the splines on teh drive shaft or the like and you need to strip down the unit to find the damage. If the prop does not turn free or the shaft does not turn after removing the porp then sound like a blockage somewhere so start at the pump which is located behind the cover which is behind the prop and clean out all the waterways then see if you can push some flexible wire up the water feed tube to the engine. there may be a blockage there. If not then you should look at the engine waterways by removing the engine from the leg and have a poke around but more than likely the problem will be down at the pump. A new impellor might be a good idea though. Check the old impellor for missing blades or severe wear.

O.K., find the blockage and/or fix the impellor.

very common - first try blowing/sucking on tell tale pipe when running but just as you start up as steam will burn your mouth also try sticking bit of wire up tell tale. worst case split leg from motor and clean chanells around cylinder head

It's more than just the teltale blocked if there is steam coming from it (In fact if the steam is coming from the telltale that is probably not blocked at all) First check the water inlet and flush any mud out with a hose, next try and get a jet of water into the water pump and flush any mud out of there. Next you may try connecting a hose up to the connection on the engine where the telltale comes from but take care because the fitting is probably only plastic. With luck the last will flush any mud out of the waterpump discharge pipe back through the pump and water intake. If that engine has the pump behind the prop take the impeller out and flush things out rather than trying to do it with the impeller in place

Keep the engine more or less upright all the time as you do not want to get water into the cylinder.

If all that is unsucessful I fear you will have to remove the lower unit and poke the mud out from wherever it is left. Hopefully it is not blocking the engine cooling channels.

If you feel you want really expert advice go to the Mercury forum at iBoats

I had steam from mine before - but was due to build up of salts despite all the flushing etc.
The outboard service guy connected a air-line to the tell-tale and blew it out .... then to make sure ran fluid through to clear the channels.

If yours is mud from Hayling - then I would try the air-line trick to blow it out ..... air in at engine tell-tale.

I still have a Johnson 4.5 to do .... similar salt build up story !!

While on the subject can anyone give me an idea how hot my Suzuki 4 hp 4 stroke should run?

After half an hours running you can barely touch the rocker cover ,no sign of any steam but seems hotter than my old 2 stroke.

The water pump is behind the prop. Remove prop and then 2 bolts to expose impeller. Not a job to be afraid of, once in you will be in a better position to identify problem which is almost certainly due to a lack of cooling water.

Agree with yoda, it is an easy job to do. Just make sure you lay everything down in order when you take it to bits. If necesary take photos/video on your phone/camera so you remember how to put it back. DO NOT force too much water up the leg as it can get into the engine.
