Memory-Map GPS receiver

There are plenty of GPS dongles about but not all seem to work with Windows 10. I have one of these U-blox 7 receivers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VK-172-U...624724?hash=item2cca4d4d54:g:~7UAAOSwFyJZigMW It works with Windows 10 but an older Sirf Star based one that I have does not. The best one I have is a U-blox 7 receiver on a long USB cable though the particular one that I have is not currently listed on e-bay. I use Open CPN and am not familiar with Memory Map but so long as it requires NMEA 0183 input like Open CPN there should be no problem. Any difficulty in getting position displayed is likely down to incorrect setting of the serial port, or because you have no serial ports installed in Windows 10. I remember that on one PC I had a battle to get it to enable a COM port as none showed up in device manager even after "show hidden devices" had been enabled. The trouble is I can't now remember what I did to solve the problem. Drivers for legacy devices are there in Windows 10, but you have to enable them.

I have remembered something. Go into Device Manager and click on view, and "show hidden devices". Look down the list for "Ports COM & LPT" and click the arrow to see if you have a COM port. If so note the number and make sure that Memory Map is set to use that port. If not then click on action in Device Manager and choose "Add Legacy Hardware" then follow the wizard to install serial ports.

I use The GPS Dongle ND-100S from Maplins, which at the present time is shown as £15.00. I initially had problems that it would work for a bit and then freeze. The first time it happened we were going into Sanna Bay near Ardnamurchan Point using Antares Charts running with MemoryMap. I was down stairs looking at the laptop when my wife on the helm said, "shouldn't we have turned by now?". She was right! After discussions with MemoryMap, they told me to download an updated driver for the particular chip and it has worked since then.

I can only find some of my notes from that time, but I think as well as looking at the
www.usglobalsat.com website for the ND-100S GPS dongle, I was also referred to

for an up to date driver.

It has worked well since then. Close inshore, I now use MemoryMap on an Android tablet so that I can keep an eye out on the rocks. MemoryMap on the laptop does however have more useful functionality for longer routes.

I think I recognise the actions that Norman E describes as well.

I use an Evermore GM-N900 which I bought from Memory Map about ten years ago when I was navigating with a laptop and Windaes XP, it has outlasted two laptops and now functions just as efficiently with Windaes Ten. Taiwan rather than mainland China. It has a 1.5m USB cable so the device itself sits on top of the curtain rail. This is our first yacht with curtains, on the others it sat on a shelf above or around the chart table. It was a lot more than £15 though, but after ten years of service I think it was good enough value.

I hook my 18 year old Garmin to my laptop to connect to MemoryMap. The outputs from the Garmin go straight into an RS232 serial connector. Of course modern laptops don't have serial ports so I added an serial to USB converter. That gives me my position on the laptop screen but I haven't managed to upload waypoints and routes from MemoryMap to the GPS.

Is the Garmin only sending NMEA data tothe PC? If so that is uni-directional. To send to the Garmin it will have to be set to Garmin ("Grmn/Grmn"?) protocol.
