Just a general question really, most Mobos have a quite strong stantion rails made out of stainless steel, plus they have bow thrusters (some have stern thrusters as well) and the bigger underwater light type have twin engines making them very manouvarable at close quarters. I was asked if a yacht was attempting a Med style mooring, either bow or stern to, would it be acceptable for the yacht to throw a big home made grapnel over the Mobos stantion to assist with mooring, ie to pull himself alongside the Mobo whilst he adjusted his lines, or could it be frowned upon?

Dont think i would be too please with that.

A line passed across and cleated off to 'spring' against would be ok. Or tie along side and then take some time to move into correct berth.

I wouldn't have been quite so polite
but as above a line to a cleat or tie along side whilst sorting yourself out no problem. by the way the stantions aren't usually as strong as they look

Attaching a line by hand to the mobo's cleat (not guard rail) is generally acceptable practice. You dont need to throw anything - you can just reach across. A few boaters can be awkward about this, but in my exp most moored boats are happy to have the line attached and provide the help that it gives. If the moored boat is unoccupied, it os ok for you just to do it, in my book

It is however completely unacceptable to throw a grapnel at the moored boat or to apply load to the guard rail or any part of the other boat apart from a cleat, and I can't see any need for such action anyway. It would be more than merely frowned upon

. . . I was asked if a yacht was attempting a Med style mooring, either bow or stern to, would it be acceptable for the yacht to throw a big home made grapnel over the Mobos stantion to assist with mooring . . .

I think NOT :)

No prob with lines but no way a grapnel hook.

To be truthful,I watched a Yacht try to lasso another yacht because the wind was blowing him away as he reversed (no pirate style grapnel involved) into the quayside, he failed of course.I thought to myself that the owner of the yacht who would have had his stantions lassoed would not have been very pleased with the strain put on them.
If i had put the post on scuttlebut asking would it be ok for a Mobo to throw a grapnel onto a yacht, I would have been threatened with violence and lynched in public, I have been very surprised just how calm and polite the mobo lot are.!
I don't know if Oceanfroggie sniffed a wind up but I suspect he did! I thought I had better come clean before someone does get upset though:)

Nah - I would only have got upset if the "explosive" bolt method had been suggested :)
