Med Boating - Gotchas?

My tub is on a 19m berth in Cap Ferrat that is coming to the end of the lease this year, it’s looking like £25k for the berth and £12k service charge for 2022...........I will be looking for an alternative !

Look East to Italy .
Its cheaper the folks are refreshingly friendly and like Brits no edge on them .Foods arguably better .Yeh a I know Brits are spoon fed the French cuisine thingy by the BBC , Bias Broadcasting corporation .
Its only 1-2 hrs away France any how you can still go and receive a nice post brexit Macron induced welcome .

Fwiw Genoa airport is a gem .There are marinas in Genoa , one fab one right next door and as I said with a quick boat the worlds , or in this case the Med , your oyster .

Drivings not that onerous either .@ Dijon head SE to Switzerland, to the St Bernard pass ( take a good handling tool ) drop into the Aosta valley round Turin and another less than 2 hrs you are there .Tolls are cheaper in Italy ad well and roads dead so you can crack on .Seen 140 mph between Turin and Savona .

You made a point a while back about the girly shopping side of keeping crew on side with dads toy .Fair enough.SoF is strong with that kinda stuff but look at Alassio and the Levente coast for shopping - Portofino , Rapallo for Italian chic .

Anyhow I imagine Elba + N Corsica will be calling this season ?

Many people that bought berths in smaller marinas such as Gallice are trying to sell the berths off at a profit as the demand is so high

Went over there on my way to Gorges du Tarn, Pont du Gar, and on to Nimes, also plenty of Chateau to spend the night in along the way. Can be very busy in the summer though, normally I mange to pick the lesser used roads.
Oh and the coffee at the café at the 2000m point on the St. Bernard has better coffee than at the top of Stelvio

At €50 per night it was as cheap as chips, and the food in the restaurant was sublime.

We live up in the mountains on a thin private road with a ridiculously steep drive. We couldn't keep a boat locally so it would have to be dry stacked or something. Certainly worth looking into.

Dry stacking is also expensive but there many many trailer parks where you can store the trailer and boat close to the Med for next to nothing

I have no idea off hand, It was to the south of Orleans and run by Best Western, we were heading there from Millau on our way back north, so maybe 250km south of Orleans, we stayed in an 18th century house in Millau which was vey nice, but food was weird to say the least.

She was not too happy!



The Range Rover was 1 week old, and this was my first longish trip in her, this was the last day the pass was supposed to be open that year but the weather was great, it was also the same night that Top Gear broadcast the greatest Driving Road in Europe when the Hamster said it was like someone had draped spaghetti over the hill.

Blimey. Once you have paid for the berth What do you get for the 12k service charge...or is it best not to ask?!

Chaps the knack is turn the ” screaming handbrake ” into a chauffeur. A good start try talking to her and popping into a conversation she choose the car. Counterintuitive I know .

ps Simplon pass is not so bendy so even a woman can do it.

The Chateau? don't remember sorry, as above it was run by Best Western, I was using a booking site for Chambre d'hote and just booking for that particular night, we did not know where we were going until we were on our way, the plan had been to go to Nimes, and then go see the Millau viaduct and we just book the next place on the day, so far we have had some really fantastic places that we have stayed.
Last time we were off for a trip we stayed at a small nondescript hotel about 30km out of Carcassonne, we were heading for Carcassonne but could not get a decent hotel there, we wondered what we had let ourselves in for when we seen the room, the shower was so small you had to get out to pick up the soap! Come dinner time asking for a table for to just drew a sharp sucking of breath through the maître d's teeth, but he whipped up a table on the pavement with 2 chairs and we sat down, then all the posh cars started pulling up and the people taking seats at the other tables on the pavement, the food was excellent and the wine was, well, I can see why they say they keep all the best for themselves. We just wander and go where ever the fancy takes us.

This was the place in Millau, it is not advertised in any way and we got there by word of mouth from another hotel that was full. It's on Avenue de la Republique

Just read this thread and we moved to So f 2 years ago from Spain, managed to get into Menton and did a 6 month once in as couldn't get anything else although Menton was great but a bit expensive for us at 18,000 a year based on short term contracts for 18m.
We have now moved to Genoa, Airport marina which is third if the cost and we have 12 month term and a great get to look after the boat as well.
Its a bit of a trek down to say St Tropez etc but for us its great as when we go we tend to do a couple of weeks at a time so not a problem to us. Would recommend Genoa airport marina and its very reasonable cost wise.

The boat tax does not depend on flag. Only on residency.
If the boat is flagged in France it is called "Le droit annuel de francisation et de navigation (DAFN)".
If the boat is not flagged in France it is called "un droit de passeport". The amounts and calculation method are the same.

The tax depends on hull the length. And another one for engine capacity which is progressive with the total engine capacity (i.e. like income tax - the bigger the engine the more you pay per litre capacity). Nothing to do with horse power or emissions.

If you have two engines over 12 liters each, it will be expensive ( ~100 CV). There is not deduction for age (there are rumours that that might be scrapped anyway), and the rate per CV (roughly one CV is about 0.24 litres) is the highest.

Is this a new tax? I have a UK flagged boat in Port Vauban and haven’t ever paid this tax, nor been asked to. Worried now that I’ve got to start budgeting more money this year!

Also, have you actually worked out how to calculate the actual amount to pay? My boat is 22m with 2 x 900hp engines and mixing those two together seems to calculate a really huge tax figure which doesn’t seem right.

Finally, does anyone know if there’s a similar tax in Italy for a UK flagged boat?

I am in ITalu with a 19m boat and no one has asked me for tax....yet! So I don’t think so. If there is, move to S Italy.....no taxes there

Are you resident in France?
If not, it does not apply to you.

The tax does not depend on HP, but on CV which is a measure of capacity. A 12 litre engine is about 50CV. It does not make any difference whether it is 100HP or 1000HP.
