Med boaters - will you get to your boat this year?

With Portugal being removed from the green list, France imposing 7 days quarantine on arrival and Spain still amber, so tests and isolation on return , it’s not looking good at the moment. Seems our government are pretty determined to try and keep us here.

The cynic in me, & others, thinks there is an element of protectionism here.

Keep people spending in the UK & collecting more taxes.

It is frankly a pathetic shambles and I suspect people are rapidly losing patience. Green today, Amber the next day. I think one cannot frankly go on anything this government says so i think people have to plan on the basis that whatever happens some testing or quarantine on way home is going to happen. The big issue is whether EU countries just say enough is enough, we don’t want you anymore and we will live with the consequences. Frankly I wouldn’t blame them especially as we do all we can to advertise ourselves as a disease ridden, variant ridden little island.

Well this is going pretty much as I predicted many months ago. Until the rest of Europe have vaccinated their adult population, or at least their elderly and vulnerable, travel is not going to open up. Many European countries are still way off achieving that which, along with our Indian variant, gives them reasons to ban us and of course here in the UK it suits the UK govt to exaggerate the threat from Europe for their own political purposes

Look on the bright side. Except for France it is still possible to travel to the Med and enjoy our boats if we can afford to do the quarantine time when we get back and even for French based boaters there are ways around their ban to get to our boats

My guess is that pressure from the European and British travel industry will see a relaxation of restrictions before the key holiday month of August

I don’t think it’s a government conspiracy, they are only responding to the science. In fact they have made the UK practically (for all intents and purpose) disease free. All your destinations have not been as ruthlessly efficient. While I’m sure that the Chancellor would rather you spend your holiday money at home (especially as it was the government who gave that money to everyone), the British people are desperate for some sunshine. And public sentiment is very important, they are politicians after all

I disagree with all of that except:-
they are politicians after all
Which just about sums it all up.

He certainly gave me, as a company director, the square root of bugger all...Zilch, nada, nowt, zip, zero, nothing.

All my self employed tradesman chums on the other hand....

(especially as it was the government who gave that money to everyone),

Some of us didnt take that money. And some industries have worked all the way through the pandemic and the people working in those industries need and deserve a holiday in the sun

Covid: US and UK on France's amber travel list from June 9

The French government has announced its traffic light-based travel rule system that is set to begin on June 9.

"All EU countries are listed as green, meaning vaccinated people can visit without conditions. The UK and US are listed as amber meaning vaccinated people from there can come but must present a negative PCR test, while non-vaccinated people can only come if they have an essential reason.
People will be considered vaccinated two weeks after they receive their full complement of doses, or four weeks for those vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson's vaccine. It has not yet been specified which vaccine types will be accepted, but it is thought it will be the four that are approved for use in the EU, those of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.
France’s tourism minister Jean-Baptiste Lemonyne announced the system this morning (June 4) in an interview on BFMTV, saying countries around the world are being classed as green, amber or red."

Is that for adults only?

The article didn't say. Any report's in France yet if this is true?
We were planning on waiting for the announcement on the 9th because that’s when the next stage of the lockdown is lifted. Later curfew, inside restaurants etc. But I will keep a lookout and report any findings

Wow if thats true thats a big shift in policy so far as the UK is concerned, at least for vaccinated people and no mention of quarantine either. Seems like our trip on 20 June could be back on

Now if only the morons in the UK govt can be persuaded to differentiate between vaccinated and non vaccinated people when it comes to quarantine on return

The morons in the UK government are in self preservation mode. As long as they can continue to scare the sh*& out of everyone people might not focus on the utter chaos, the care home policy and the shambles re letting 20,000 people from India in in 4 days when it was blatantly obvious there was an issue. Bottom line the government needs to keep the narrative going and scaring people with news of super variants is one way of doing this. They are even talking re extending furlough which means more Albourne shortages as people would far prefer to sit at home on 80% of take home than work, and who can blame them.

By coincidence I was listening to Prof Barros, the president of the Portugese Health Council (equivalent of our Vallance/Whitty) and he was dismissive of the UK's removal of his country from the green list. Whilst infections are roughly similar to the UK, in Portugal this is only because they have a hotspot in Lisbon (no prizes for guessing why) and holiday areas like the Algarve are virtually free of infection. In addition they still have restrictions in place such as bars being completely closed and other hospitality venues closing at 10.30 as well as mandatory mask wearing outside. Also he claimed that Portugal has one of the best genome sequencing capabilities in Europe and therefore has as good a handle on their infection situation as anyone

Barros is a scientist but he came as close to actually saying that the UK's move was politically motivated as he could without saying it. And yes why did the UK govt keep the borders open to India for several days when there was clear evidence of a risk of bringing infection into the country but has closed its border with Portugal when there is no such risk

Bogeyman populist politics at work in the UK

Easy answer to that - we were getting our Astra Zenica jabs from them.

Apparently the majority of UK delivered AZ vaccine is made in the UK but also many other sites around the world including Holland, Germany, Belgium and Thailand

The received wisdom is that Bozo wanted to delay closing the borders to India because he had a trip planned to India to negotiate a trade deal At least we know Boris Johnson has now half-closed the stable door

The desperation of post Brexit British politics I guess
