whilst clearing out the garage (upcoming sale of much quality junk) i came across a very old (pre WWII) article from a long gone periodical called wireless world .. it was the publisher Amalgamated Press which made me curious. AMP were the public quoted cpy which a publisher by the name of iliffe was attached to ... iliffe sold AMP to IPC and this and other journals languished for some time before IPC, apparently, saw the value in these monthly magazines and acquired others (incl YM?) and the rest is history ....

Iliffe's media interests (now a lord) expanded thro' Yattendon Investment Trust and in 1992 the trust bought Marina Developments Ltd, MDL. Iliffe is an active (motor)sailer owning the Dalvina, a splendid 80' yacht built at Berthon in 1988 used as a comittee boat in 2001 america's cup .........

so ... ybw owes its existence to the owner of MDL? ... now there's a thought ...

just in case anybody thinks i've gone saft in the heid ... no doubt JG Watson left the cpy because he was getting tired out wheeling the barrowloads of cash up to the bank ...

Yes, I dare say having the market share that MDL have, it wouldn't be hard to end up making squillions while having nothing more stressful to worry about than deciding what to spend it on....

Cheers,
david

Hi Brendan, no worries....
I just think it a shame that MDL still comes in for stick because of a) long-dead history and b) the locations it has invested in.
All the share-holders ever asked me for was a business that they could be proud of. They accepted, on every occasion, all my requests for monies to improve the lot of customers and staff and are certainly not the avericious lot they are painted by some observers.
I guess I had better stop writing because this one could run and run.....
Stay well,
John

Your garage

I'm short of a couple of copies of the Eagle from 1953 - the first 2 weeks of June are missing - have you got them and also a Boys Own from Feb 1947 - we used ours to block up a hole in the window duiring the big freeze and it never recovered.

... the bare facts are a bit short on detail but it appears (like the ronson shaver owner) that the owner of one of britain's oldest and most respected provincial newspaper publishers perhaps took a fancy to MDL as somewhere convenient to park his boat .. !

Re: are you still with em?

You are right, I left back in July to return to the travel industry. Now based in Bangkok running an inbound tour operator for Indo-China. (Well, it's a tough life, but someone has to do it!)....
