Could anyone advise me as to the likely cause of my engine hour meter failing. The lcd readout has disapeared and no amount of wiggling wires at the back seems to work.

Quite simple, Volvo hour meters don't like damp!

You will not have lost the reading, just the readout. If you remove the rev counter and dry it in an airing cupboard it will probably recover. I used to do ours when we had a MD22 by drying it in front of a fan heater for an hour before refitting it.

Other than that fit an old fashioned type hour meter from Vetus or similar, cost around £30.

i just replaced my perkins m50 with a volvo tmd22. now on the perkins the hour meter failed, so the previous owner put another hour meter in down below by the chart table and it worked fine.

on replacing the engine i needed a new dash, i got some volvo panel with a digital readout, guess what? it dident work. so all i done was bought a new hr meter off ebay for £30 and replaced the one by the chart table. not a problem since!

My experience entirely, but gave up trying to dry it out in the end. You can run the new meter from the fuel gauge 12v.
