Odd boat names - Myfanwy

Nothing odd about naming a boat after a lady - it's a girl's name in Wales and a song sung often by male voice choirs, or when drunk in a pub.

The Y is pronounced roughly as u as in dust, and f is a v in welsh so pronounced as in vest. (ff in welsh is the English f) The final y is a bit like an ee sound, so when pronounced properly it sounds nice.

the text says disparagingly "is the owner of the boat married, it's doubtful" - well the owner could possibly be married to Myfanwy or it could be his daughter. You could have done a quick check on this one before taking the p1$$ MBM!

I think an apology would be in order...

Myfanwy ... a perfectly respectable (feminine) and romantic name for a boat..

Why is it anger, O Myfanwy,
That fills your eyes so dark and clear?
Your gentle cheeks, O sweet Myfanwy,
Why blush they not when I draw near?
Where is the smile that once most tender
Kindled my love so fond, so true?
Where is the sound of your sweet words,
That drew my heart to follow you?

What have I done, O my Myfanwy,
To earn your frown? What is my blame?
Was it just play, my sweet Myfanwy,
To set your poet's love aflame?
You truly once to me were promised,
Is it too much to keep your part?
I wish no more your hand, Myfanwy,
If I no longer have your heart.

Myfanwy, may you spend your lifetime
Beneath the midday sunshine's glow,
And on your cheeks O may the roses
Dance for a hundred years or so.
Forget now all the words of promise
You made to one who loved you well,
Give me your hand, my sweet Myfanwy,
But one last time, to say "farewell".

Funny, now you mention it
Always drunk in the Pub when I,ve tried a rendtition;)

Good explaination for none speakers ref your 'breakdown 'Ellesar.

'muvanoo e' might roll off an English man's tongue ok too.

I have just looked at the page.

I had to 'translate' to English to try and fathom out what the twist was!!:rolleyes:

that's a south wales accent though you were a gog? :D

Junno, although a 'gog' as you quite rightly point out (I,m beggining to be a bit suspicious about you):p
Sometimes when listening to S Pedwar C etc.
The 'Southern Welsh' is more understandable!
Wierd:confused:

Anyway
A 'Sais' wouldn't know a Welsh Accent variable from a 'Gift Sheep in the Mouth' if yer know what I mean;)

Sorry, no offence intended. Myfanwy is indeed a lovely Welsh name (meaning beloved I believe), it was just a rather rubbish attempt at a double entendre. I'll hang up my joker's hat for the time being.

I'm sure the Welsh name "Myfanwy" was popularised by John Betjeman's poem of that title. (No. 98 in Classic FM's "One Hundred Favourite Poems".
