Just wondering if any of you out there have had an article you sent in published and how long it took to get into print?
E mailed an article to Jake Kavangh end of 2001 and had reply that it well written and funny and would be used when relevent spot came up.
Getting impatient to see name in print!!!

Unfortunately you sound like an amateur. Pieces are usually commissioned; not 'sent in'.

Re: ouch deckmaster! publish here anyway?

humm. I've had some bits and pieces published. It can take some months, but not usually six months, so he's probly lost it or chucked it or forgotten it. Editors do this sort of thing, because they can.

Perhaps you might consider publishing it here, sjn? It can still go in MBM.

Re: ouch deckmaster! publish here anyway?

Thanks deckmaster!!!
Spoke to Jake after e mailing it to him and that was his comments on it and his exact words were 'if not thought good enough to publish is sent back with refusal note straight away'!
Cannot believe all articles from private boaters that appear in magazine have been commisioned. How does editor know about these people unless they write in?
Anyway article is about us changing our 29 foot Fairline Mirage for a Sealine 218 and trailing her around to different rivers and coastal areas. It is entitled 'A tale of downsizing' and the reason I wrote it is because I think the way we have gone with our boating is quite unusual and could show other people what they are missing!!
Hopefully when it is published deckmaster won't be quite so rude about it!

Coliholic would be very interested to read the bit explaining how you managed to sell the Mirage. Any tips you can post? Sooner he gets this sorted, sooner he will buy a massive flybridge :)

yes, article printed within 6 weeks of discussions with MBY.

They were looking for a piece, I submitted draft, they altered to suit space, etc.

Article in this months copy.

Got a nice twin diesel engine Mirage that I could perhaps be persuaded to part with. Good for 23 ish kts or river.

C'mon Jake print the article and lets see how he sold his Mirage, or as someone else suggested, post it here. Pref latter 'cos I'll be a ble to read it sooner.

SJN: THAT ARTICLE IN FULL???

A tale of downsizing

Bigger is always better, surely? Or so we’re often told. But whilst using our 29 foot Fairline Mirage, I had the idea of downsizing. Surely a more compact boat would be easier to trail around a wider variety of crusing areas? And so we traded the Mirage for a Sealine 218. The outcome was marvellous. On board, we quickly adapted to our more restricted surroundings, but with all the cost savings of a smaller boat.

Once we had downsized the boat succesfully, my attention turned elsewhere. Could I “downsize” other aspects of my work or leisure? I’d always been keen on writing. But, like the Mirage, I felt that some sentences had become unnecessarily long. Could my sentences be “downsized” too?

So, decided to ditch all pronouns. Found this gave a more direct and military style to my writing.

Later, progressed to eliminate definitive articles, some indefinite articles, most possessive adjectives too, and even auxiliary verbs. Text now takes on distinctly more commanding “telegram” feel, inhibiting storytelling warmth yet strangely arresting. Also, readers potentially attracted by “crossword puzzle” style? Inserting missing words, guessing hidden meanings, wondering what on about whilst reading, possibly? Chance to write professionally looms, perhaps?

So, wrote piece regarding downsizing to Jake at MBM (3 letters). Jake impressed. Wrote back “If article not acceptable would immediately respond with rejection note” - so obviously MBM editorial style concurs with own. Took up position outside WH Smiths to await publication. Standing by…

Re: Ooooh a deal!

Have you mailed Jake about this?

Some articles that are accepted cannot be scheduled straight away. Despite appearances mags are not necessarily that hand-to-mouth and again, despite appearances (just to save me from a bunch of forum users that are somewhat more cynical even than journos) one of the editor's tasks is to achieve a balance of interests in an issue.

That said, you are right to ask. I'll forward your post to Jake.
