Great report on IPS/Pod drives , seems a few of us were wrong to question the reliability.
Makes good reading , well done MB&Y :)

Yes, they have become rather good. We use them on all our Aluminium Van der Valks and they give amazing speed and also very low fuel consumption compared with the shaft drive equivalent. An added benefit on the larger boats is that you can actually handle them alone or with just another crew member without any worry at all.
An interesting report all round I thought.

I thought it was a good article too, but I did however help contribute to it, so probably a bit biased on reflection!!

However I think the report gave a fair evaluation of Pods, Greg definitely put a lot of effort into the research, talking to a number of owners and certainly from our experience, the fuel consumption is the same as the old Phantom 40 on shafts and we've moved up 4ft in length!

The joystick control is second to none, although I do still try and regularly keep my hand in, using just the sticks! The small price to pay is though the running costs, with two lift out and anode changes per year and obviously a pod service (oil being the main cost), which would be similar to a leg service on outdrives, but not as economical as the running costs on shafts.

It’s very interesting now to see Fairline returning to IPS (having latterly dropped in on the T44) with their forthcoming new Targa 45 due in the spring.

Cheers

Phil
