Thanks very much for the free Brolly I was Promised for taking out a subscription of Motor Boat And Yachting, I received it yesterday.

2 Problems..

Firstly..
The brolly although nice, says 'Yachting World' all round it. Now forgive if i'm wrong, But i don't subscribe to that magazine, and probably never will. Its going to look a bit out of place in a marina that only has 1 Yacht in it, All the rest being Motor Boats . And Sailing in Loch Lomond, Yachting is not very popular.

Secondly..
The Courier/Transport Company hired to deliver it, deceided not to park in the street or on my large driveway, but instead deceided to park half on the drive and half on my brand new path, that was only laid last wednesday, and proceeded to smash 10.. Yes 10 slads. Why??? Why did the driver have to bring his van into the drive???. Why!! Because the young of today are too DAM lazy, Parking on the street would have meant walking another 10ft or so, O and we cant have that can we??

So what happens now!!!!

Well the Driver ran like f##k down the drive when he realised what he'd done, The Van wasn't marked, and there is only a packaging ladel on the package. So a bit of investigation work is required, starting with a call to the Promotion Company YBW use.

Do i have a leg to stand on? I don't know!! What i do know is, I Don't have a Bl##dy path to stand on.!!

So tell me do i have any rights.

And would anyone From MB&Y, like to coment.

Cheers for the free tube the brolly came in though.

Alistairr.

Re: The path to success

I would suggest that the best course of action from now would be to use Tarmac or (since you have lots of busted slabs) to use "crazy paving". But you could also take the opportunity to use new slabs.

But next time, whatever you use, make sure that you (or the contractors) bed any slabs on solid concrete if there is the slightest chance that a van/car will park on them, rather than bed them on sand, which is easier and cheaper, but risks a snapped slab if a van or car parks on them, as you have discovered.

The best way is to use a rough concrete base no more than 2cm below the base level required for the slabs and let that set: then bed the slabs on a finer mix still using sharp sand (NOT mortar sand for bricklayeing which is weaker) about 5: 1 ratio of sand to cement.

If you'd done this in the first place then you wouldn't hae had these problems, and it's fortunate that the van driver has identified the fault: otherwise you could have been labouring away for years thinking you had a decent path, when in fact it had underlying (sic) flaws, only fully revealed with the intervention of MBY.

This is not the first time they have been so helpful, as I do recall the current Editor kindly came on our boat and showed how the camper top zips could fail. I didn't really believe him, but he even went as far as to helpfully demonstrate their fragilty by busting one of them for me. Only this sort of incident increases your experience in matters of zips, or in your case, paths.

hope this helps :)

Brolly — doh!

Path — bugger!

Will get someone to contact you about getting you an MBY brolly, and find you the name of the courier company so you can get them to pay for a new one.

Re: The path to success

Glad I could be of help in demonstrating the (frankly) woeful standard of Italian zip technology.

If you need any help locating manufacturing flaws in your new AMG Merc, I will be happy to oblige (apparently the air-bags in those Mercs deploy even in relatively slow-speed shunts, so that's something I could check for you).

well, she shouldn't be worried about there being builders around - in fact she should be PLEASED: having builders or any sort of construction workers around is a mark of a successful thriving enterprise! If the business was going badly it would be very static, no gardeners or builders - but not hers!

Further, it gives her the chance to bond with potential new clients by opening up a "oh heck, the builders..." line of conversation, dramatically increasing the likliehood of sales and a "feelgood" factor from those clients that see you are ploughing the profits into the business and not pissing it up the wall on a flippin boat, which I bet she takes care not to mention, at least not at first eh?

I think that eventually you will recognise what good luck you are having - and all thanks to MBY!

Re: The path to success

Thanks for that, (i think ),

The Slabs were brand new last week, and i have reciepts to prove it, there was 1/2t of hard core, laid and compressed, then the slabs were laid on a bed of cement.

Remember we are talking abouta footpath here, not a driveway.
I am not a builder, i've never mixed sand and cement in my life, The guys landscaping the garden took care of that, and also did a great job.

The drive, path, and fencing is all finished, they are coming back on thursday to finish the front garden.

If you fancy a holiday in Ayrshire soon, i will give you free digs, and you can fix it for me.

Re: Pix please

hm, so it's a NEW path is it? But off-road parking is perfectly feasible, as the van driver found out. I mean, he didn't screech round the side of the house and park on the back lawn now did he? Be honest, the van must've been plonked in a perfectly van-like place, and the very fact that there was hardcore AND a bed of cement shows that the builders knows that very well.

For a start, it's worth having a look underneath. Half a ton of hardcore (fnarr) isn't really very much at all - if he's snapped half the slabs, then it's only 25 kilo of hardcore per slab, or about erm a few bricks, tops. Also, it can't have been on a "bed" of cement otherwsie the things would be far less likely to snap - in fact, lay a concrret slab on some flat concrete and drive over it a hundred times no problem - but I bet you'll find he did little dobs here and there at the edges to get the right level leaving a big gap in the middle. Or, not enough hardcore (fnarr) so it all sank in the mud underneath. Or both.

You could pursue this as well as the courier company, praps one paying for the slabs and the other laying them properly this time so when the next MBY van turns up, or the Editor arrives in person to apologise, they don't snappem again.

I think we need some pix to show what's what.

Re: Pix please

Yes, I took some pics, last night, but i've left the camera at home, so i will post them either tonight or tomorrow.

You seem to be forgeting one thing....... Its a FOOTPATH not a driveway, Theres no need for it to stand up too taking 3tons, the average man weighs about 13st, and for that the job, great. It obiviously ain't gonna stand up to a transit van running over them, is it???

Strangely enough, the bag I received said Yachting World on it too, instead of Motor Boats Monthly, but fortunately it did not contribute to my new hot water tank failure, which then destoyed my dining room below. :0(

Re: Pix please

hm, footpath or not, the fact they laid it on concrete i reckon PROVES they expected some weight on it.

Spose you might consider cleaning off the tyre marks and saying the weight of your swmbo did it, and the builders won't dare say a word? But that is a bit naughty, so let's stay with the constructional issues, follwing those all-important pix. Praps puttem on your website? Don't need a pic of the swmbo (unless she weighs as much as a van, in which case we definitely don't need a pic).

Note also a tranny van won't weigh 3 tons, probly. In fact, it might only weigh 1.5 tonnes. So one wheel will weigh 375 kilos, which is stil likely a bit more than most swmbos BUT what if swmbo was pushing a wheelbarrow full of slabs to fix the path?! I think the path should be able to take it - it's only two very fat git gits on one slab. It should be able to take that surely?

Re: Pix please

So you're not into big women then? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

BTW a Transit van is rated to 3.5t.

Re: Pix please

ah, but the next person who buys your house might easily be very very heavy indeed. Anyway, if the trannie van is rated at 3.5 tonnes thats when loaded with heavy things like erm paving slabs, not boaty umbrellas. And remebr he zoomed off so obviously bnot heavily laden. So 2 tonnes maximum i bet, 500 kg per wheel ALSO with one wheel on the drive (say) then the downhill wheels wd've been taking more of the weight.

If the new path is already a bit busted i reckon the buiklder will feel not to hard done by you paying for more slabs and him fitting them free, but this time a bit more hardcore(fnarr) and better concret all over and tamp them down with a massive hammer not a little tink tink tink hammer (tappem and you will hear if there 's a space underneath the unbusted ones) ready for the next twat delivery van driver.

The van company will happily pay for the slabs i bet, so it shd be free all round to you, plus the added bonus of knowing you are van-proof. Provide that the van only has umbrellas in it.
