Mayday Sunsail 4035 (4305?) on Sunday.

I wonder how many people on this forum have chartered in Greece, Turkey, The Baltic etc etc without speaking the local language?
+1, very much doubt many British charterers speak Greek or Turkish. Fortunately when you book a boat some one can usually speak English. Similarly I think a large organisation like Sunsail would have people who spoke different languages so they can be similarly accommodating. The U.K. can do with all the money it can get, thank goodness for Sunsail and similar organisations who make an effort to attract tourists and trade to this country.

Yes, I sometimes work with with non-English-as-a-first-language-speakers who are culturally reluctant to come out and say "No, I can't guarantee that I will do what I've said yes to".

Of course, my schoolboy French doesn't cover "Is this 2-stroke oil fully synthetic, suitable for injection-mix rather than pre-mix" or "Please Mr Harbourmaster, can you tell us where we can get some old tyres because our fenders are starting to pop, now that the storm is at its height"
This is not easy - even these sources have strange content.

Damage to vessel by ice: “I have developed stability problems, heavy icing. Request ice breaker assistance”
If you develop stability problems due to heavy icing. The last thing you need is a ice breaker.
1) This happen when you are in open sea under condition with below 0 temperatures and sea spray.
2)Ice breakers will not necessarily by close.
3)You will not get much help from a ice breaker, the solution is to reduce the spray of cold water and/or knock the ice of the rig/superstructure

No need for an ice breaker here - the weight of the ice is the problem - just remove the ice from this boat..

The ice on this lightpost was built up after 6 hours

UPDATE ON 4035 crewman and notice to ill informed!!

How did the injured crewman fare after the incident?
Any more information regarding the accident?
I was in Langstone Harbour at the time and heard the Mayday call (but not a DSC call??)
The crew appeared to be all Russian only speaking, so it was a bit difficult to understand what was going on ( the Mayday caller couldn't give any ideas of their location)

Must applaud the young lady of the CG who coordinated the rescue, very calm, proficient and articulate with her responses- top job!! What would we do without the CG if the Government decides to axe this wonderful service??
And a round of applause for the other vessels/skippers who offered assistance and offers of help (even to the point of offering a Russian translator!) to help the crew during the event.
Puts your faith back into humanity eh?

Dear all ill informed!!!

Firstly may I say I find many comments on this forum completely Racist and will be looking into to a complaint.

Secondly Sunsail does not accept just credit card qualifications, all skippers on board each vessel had the required certification. There was a DSC go out and why the CG could not obtain a lat/long off of that I do not know. That is something for the MAIB, which is why I will not go into full details until after the MAIB report. I was acting as a tactician on-board another vessel within that regatta.

I also work in the commercial marine sector within shipping and I can assure you that the CG and I deal with foreign speaking Maritime professionals on a daily basis, this does NOT make them any less qualified. In fact by your comments it makes you look all the more inexperienced to quote such twaddle! Many masters of Ships, of which there were 2 skippers in the fleet who work on large vessels as well, manage to cover the world more times than you can imagine, often short crewed. Also this is in vessels with more wind-age than the average Sailing Super-yacht, let alone a Sunsail vessel.

My Thanks go out to the Master of the St Faith who offered assistance, FVSea-Juicer who stood by and offered a Lat/long when I boarded 4035 to assist as I could not leave the deck, however I did give a distance and bearing from North Sturbridge and visually directed in all agencies to assist.

Also FYI, there were a number of BRITISH/ENGLISH and BRITISH RUSSIANS who were tasked to take control or assist should an incident occur of which happened!

If you actually go out to sea in more than a puff of wind more than once, in fact in can happen on the 1st trip too, you will know that WORSE things happen at sea and some things happen to even the best sailors of the world that you rate highly!

But as an update for the people asking on the injured crew, he was discharged the following day with a sore head, black eye and a few stitches and a story to tell and returned home back to Russia.

Speaking the language has nothing to do with race.

But we can go and hire cars in different countries without knowing the language - so other than provdiing evidence of their yachting capability language isn't a total barrier.

rac·ism (rszm)
n.
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Paki is considered Racist, calling them Rusci etc does, many are referring to their language, culture and identity! THAT'S RACIST!!

Brit, Limey, Aussie, Taffy, Jock etc. etc. Unbelievable and unfounded claims of racism do more harm than good.

The guy asked if SS knew of his qualifications as little English/Russian was spoken, not that he was less qualified because he was Russian.

Rusci is Russian for Russian, although I am sure you are spelling it correctly

Rusci was popularised in modern culture rhrough it's use in the film Red Oktober, the owner of the recent event involving all said Russians, who is also Russian, informed me that it was considered offensive and a Racist comment! So I beg to differ, if a Russian finds it offensive, then its offensive!

I personally find limey offensive.

>otherwise did Sunsail really charter a boat to a group who did not speak English??? Is this further evidence of acceptance of credit card qualifications? In other words the charterer saying "who cares, we got the money!"

There is a large group of Russians who regularly charter through LateSail usually taking 20+ boats from the operators ncluding Sunsail, Dream Yachts, Horizon etc. It sounds like it might be them. We met them when they charterd in Antigua and many of them spoke English. The are really experienced and competent sailors and they charter the boats to race.

Sounds like one of them made a mistake, which is not unusual when racing.

What? Make friends on here, sorry I sail, powerboat, crew on a lifeboat and I am a merchant mariner. I don't need to make friends in virtual reality, I have them in the real world!

What you mean day skipper?

Sorry, but the belief you have that you sail etc. etc. impresses me, well it doesnt!:)

Some here are far far more qualified than you:D
