Mayday Sunsail 4035 (4305?) on Sunday.

Rusci was popularised in modern culture rhrough it's use in the film Red Oktober, the owner of the recent event involving all said Russians, who is also Russian, informed me that it was considered offensive and a Racist comment! So I beg to differ, if a Russian finds it offensive, then its offensive!

I personally find limey offensive.

You may find David's swmbo is Russian.

"русский" (pronounced as "roo-s-kee") means "Russian"

Anyway, we digress.....................you blew the whole post out of context. There was no suggestion that being Russian effected his sailing ability/experience. The suggestion was that maybe his experience was not known through lack of communication because of the language barrier.

Brit, Limey, Aussie, Taffy, Jock etc. etc. Unbelievable and unfounded claims of racism do more harm than good. The guy asked if SS knew of his qualifications as little English/Russian was spoken, not that he was less qualified because he was Russian.
I'm proud to be an Aussie....
I prefer the abreviation..

Am i allowed to call my bike a bike even though it's short for bicycle...

Is the word mongrel also a rascist term for mixed race..
How come your allowed to be rascist to yourself and you get stuck into the rest for what you deem as rascist comments

You are certainly allowed to call your bike a bike, my mates call my wife a bike, so If that's not insulting a bike, calling a bike a bike is ok

Never mind folks, the ex public school bunch have got the fleet this weekend, so you get some competence and occasionally incompetence with good decent posh British accents instead.

There will be marginally less incompetence this particular weekend for the simple reason that I was unable to make it there this year. I am supporting my old school team to the hilt.....though it all finshed at 2pm I expect..so I hope they did well.

Nothing was hit, no Navigation mark was hit!

What a shame, it's so much better a position fix than that old fashioned three point business.

I agree entirely with you that language has nothing to do with maritime competence, especially so amongst professionals. As an amateur I can navigate about in the Øresund quite happily without speaking any of the Scandinavian languages. It's not the language skills of the crew that is in question, it's their sailing. It's been reported that they hit a charted mark and, under normal circumstances of reasonable visibility and diligent position fixing, to do that requires something fairly unusual to happen.

So. What did happen to this boat?

Yes I heard this, and got the DSC alert, the lady who is a regular Solent CG watch officer has overseen other casualty working and I agree, she is very professional and very much in command, at one point she even firmly announced "selonce mayday" when one of the attending lifeboats called on 16.

As for the injured Russci, I have no idea. I would though like to think he must have been the English speaker of the crew, otherwise did Sunsail really charter a boat to a group who did not speak English??? Is this further evidence of acceptance of credit card qualifications? In other words the charterer saying "who cares, we got the money!"

Oh dear me, what a to do. This thread has become so bazaar I'm not sure if its now been subject of a massive trol and should be ignored or it should be taken seriously. I'm going to take it seriously and for the sake of clarity:

Please would those who think what is posted above is racist please explain how possibly it can be? The ONLY reference to the Russian is highlighted above. The ONLY derogatory remarks are aimed at the possibility that a company had charted a boat to someone who would be unable to communicate with the CG in an emergency, which is what happened! THERE ARE NO DEROGATORY REMARKS MADE ABOUT ANYONE ELSE! If there had have been someone on the boat who could have communicated with Solent CG then there would have been no need for another station to provide Lat & Long coordinates.

Nothing was said about the sailing ability of the crew, or racist remarks about anyone.

The way this thread has gone is another clear example of people on the forum half reading posts, then jumping to conclusions and providing half cocked replies. Something which happens all too often IMO.

We shouldn't go sailing abroad, then?

What about all the people who sail abroad, in French, Spanish, Portugese, Greek, Turkish waters then?

Can they all speak the local language? I think not!

I think they're called buoys..

Now I'm not Russian, but I managed to hit East Shingles on a balmy night with an ebb tide flowing..

It's just possible..

I suppose it is.

I've never hit a buoy. I'm sure many much more experienced folk will be along to tell me how easy it is to do.

But until I do it I will tend to imagine that the encounter is rather like this.

Sunsail charters

It beggars belief that Sunsail could charter a yacht to a totally non-English-Speaking crew, unless, of course, the English-speaker was the injured party??

How did the injured crewman fare after the incident?
Any more information regarding the accident?
I was in Langstone Harbour at the time and heard the Mayday call (but not a DSC call??)
The crew appeared to be all Russian only speaking, so it was a bit difficult to understand what was going on ( the Mayday caller couldn't give any ideas of their location)

Must applaud the young lady of the CG who coordinated the rescue, very calm, proficient and articulate with her responses- top job!! What would we do without the CG if the Government decides to axe this wonderful service??
And a round of applause for the other vessels/skippers who offered assistance and offers of help (even to the point of offering a Russian translator!) to help the crew during the event.
Puts your faith back into humanity eh?
