Maybe silly question ... Will an echo sounder work through a small alloy boat hull m?

Yes, but I was thinking of the head being in the pipe as better protected if you bash things often?
Might be a problem with turbulence and cavitation across the transducer face when underway. We used to mount survey transducers over the side clamped on the end of a steel tube. They were rigged so that the forward edge was trimmed slightly upwards to give a clean water flow over the face.

Thanks, that did cross my mind and I wondered about cutting the tube at an angle down to the rear. If new, they usually give you a plastic fairing that might be incorporated .

You can get a Hawkeye for less than £200 - comes with a transducer which has a transom mount very much with boats like yours in mind.

I have a HH fishfinder with transom mount that unfortunately locks in position - so I only use as a free-hand unit.

I have a Nasa Clipper Dual Echo / Speed complete in box never used. It was to replace the Echopilot Duet I have on main boat - but I managed to acquire a replacement display saving the work of cutting bulkhead to fit the Nasa.

I really do not need to buy any gear other the mount bits ..... a bit of tube and clips is even possible with my 'scrooge-iness' !!
