Hi .. was thinking of buyin a maxum 3000 from the USA and repowering with Diesel engines ..
I would like to buy a " bare boat ie engines took out or knackered and have it as a project .. has anyone ever done this ??thanks

my motivation is to get a shell of a boat for a couple of 1000 and then put in the running gear so I know it's as fresh as can be ..
I've looked at that maxum you've listed and it's go zero paperwork with it etc .. so I would be buying blind .. " lost in a move " the broker said .. even though he also said he has sold the owner that boat two years ago for £38k .. makes me wonder eh ..

But how much are a pair of new diesel engines and outdrives? Even secondhand you're not going to be saving much compared to the finished one above once they have been serviced and fitted, plus the cost of getting a donor boat from the US.

If the boats.co.uk Maxum is what you are looking for why not make an offer subject to survey?
 
Was sold by the time I went back.
I just feel I will “ know “ the boat once I’ve put the new engines in. The Maxum is perfect for my budget and requirements .. I haven’t got Fairline Money I’m afraid !!
 
I'm sure you have looked into it, but a pair of decent new engines will set you back somewhere in the region of £40k. Can't see it being economically viable. When all is said and done you will have paid out probably £50k plus. What could that buy you on the used market.
 
Was budgeting £3-5k for the boat .. and using Repower marine for two long blocks for 3.5k each .. will get the local mechanic to switch over the engines /service the legs and then as and when the aux part go replace as I go along ..
I did this when my 5.7 blew and it worked out ok ..

Ah, ok. Your mention of Diesel engines in the first post threw me off course. You now mean re-power with a pair of new petrol V6 or V8 engines, using the existing legs and the old ancillaries. Is that correct?

You also mentioned buying a bare boat, ie no engines, which also threw me off track.

to be honest it’s all about loose as a boat may turn up with one knackered engine .. or both .. etc etc ..
I’m pretty open .. and I know there are a few other threads sort of on this topic ..

What I would say is that it is more often the legs or engine ancillaries that give trouble, rather than the engines themselves. V6 and V8 lumps are simple and reliable, if a little thirsty, and rarely go wrong.
 
The boat it’s self came with v6 v8 and diesels options .. what do you reckon the fuel consumption diff is between the two petrols and do you think it’s worth hanging on for the diesel ?? I don’t do a great deal of miles

Your twin petrol engines will use about 4 litres per mile when you are cruising at around 25-30 knots, which works out at 120 litres per hour if you are lucky.

You also need to consider where you are going to be getting your fuel from - is there petrol at your marina or are you going to be going back and for to the supermarket with cans? What is the price you are going to be paying for diesel rather than petrol - that will tell you your hourly running cost.

For me a single petrol in a 25ft boat makes sense, twin petrols on outdrives in anything bigger starts to get very expensive, albeit very quickly.
 
My current boat is 25 ft and has a single Petrol 5.7 ...
blimey that is a lot of Petrol .. I know why it’s Ok in America but why o why do people Have them over here ?? What’s the diesel conparisson ?? And what do people Repower with ??
