I bought a Moody 333 last autumn. I was attracted by the furling mainsail and by the logic of the MaxiRoach system. The sail set well enough on the few occasions we were able to use her in October, but was stiff.

We have replaced the seized sheaves in the boom. The sail is now easier to furl both ways. However, we were never convinced that the previous owner had the system set up correctly. He told us he would send the instructions for the system, didn't and then said they were on the boat. They were not.

I have found Maxi Roach Ltd. very unwilling to communicate. I did once speak to a very pleasant woman who assured me that somebody had emailed me. That was about two weeks ago. I guess they route their emails via Neptune.

I am prepared to believe it is a good system, but I would simply like to have some exemplar diagrams of ways in which the lines and sheaves may be organised.

If anybody can help I shall be most grateful.

Firstly, find out whether the stiffness is in the foil/mast assembly or in the control lines. It is a good system that seldom seems to be fitted well. The previous owner of my boat had it professionally fitted and it has taken me three years to get it right. Try pulling the sail out by hand with both lines slack at the mast. If it is stiff in the mast then there are two possibilities; either the bearings are partially siezed or the mast is not straight. My trouble was the furling and outhaul lines went round so many corners that friction built up. I removed the outhaul from inside the boom, allowing me to fit decent ball race blocks at each end of the boom. I also replaced all the blocks and deck organisers at the base of the mast with ball race units. This has now transformed the operation. Despite what they say in the literature, you still have to come head to wind to reef if there is any strength in it - or at least take the load off the sail. Also, there should be a stop of some description about a third of the way from the outer end of the boom to stop the car pulling down on the clew and not out. Hope this helps, if you have any more questions PM me.

I think I sent a PM yesterday; hard to tell.
Thanks for your advice and thoughts. I shall be out of the country until next Friday.
I'll get in touch again when I return.

If you have a simple diagram of the way you rig your outhaul and inhaul and can Fax it to 01363 866 941 i shall be most grateful.

Alternatively, if you have the time and generosity, you could post to: Will Taylor, Mill Farm Barn, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Crediton, Devon EX17 4 BD.

Thanks again,

Will
