is there a lot of power difference from the Yamaha 5hp and the Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke engines then as I have a Yamaha 5hp on there now

also does it have to be a Yamaha what bout the mariner version 2 strike 8hp engine

Yep, 8 hp is two cylinder and bigger displacement, so will have much more grunt.

I know the Yam is a bulletproof engine, as I had one for a few years, not sure about the mariner, probably OK, and you may not have much choice anyway

Alternative solution has just gone past us, (Moulin Blanc), not sure it would get up on the plane though...

Another vote for the Yamaha 8hp 2 Stroke.

I have a 2.7m RIB that weighs 30Kgs. The Yam weighs 27Kgs and together they make a great package.

In fact, at the National YBW Tender Racing Championship at Allum Bay some years back, mine took the chequered flag leaving quite a few beasties in its wake.

I've had the motor for 12 years, and apart from the waterways in the head needing a clean out every now and then, it's been a fantastic piece of kit.

Both of these engines are physically the same size as a 15Hp and they can be uprated too, the Yam with a reed valve...

That is interesting RR. I have the 9.9 Yam on a Lodestar, I think 2.8m, but with a GRP floor, so it is quite solid but heavy. It planes with two adults, but only if they sit on or in front of the seat. It won't plane once you get 3 adults in it. But maybe with a bit more power, so how do I get the altered reed valve (PS - not bothered about warranties)?

I don't think it affects warranties as it's a Yamaha mod/part that you need. It makes quite a difference too but does increase fuel consumption.

Ask any Yamaha dealer or look on their website. Some people think it's just a throttle stop setting but it isn't, you need the reed valve too as a friend of mine has done it to his 9.9.
