Standard issue boat mattresses seem to be as hard as rock. Has anyone had any success with any custom sized mattresses or mattress toppers? Any recommendations?

We had a memory foam topper for a few years, cheap Amazon thing but it was surprisingly comfortable and transformed the sleep on our American boat (which seem to have rock hard mattresses). We changed our boat and started again with a hard foam mattress which was awful. We have since gone for a custom fit mattress which was a fair few quid. I'd weigh up how long you spend on the boat vs investment, the topper is worth a go in my view.

We used marine bedding company for mattress toppers on our American sports cruiser. Great service and an excellent product. Not cheap, but not stupidly expensive either.
Tim Cheetham is the main guy, give him a call, brilliant service??

We bought a king size memory foam topper from IKEA. Unzipped the outer took the foam out and cut it to shape with scissors and then adjusted the outer cover to fit. £40 and works a treat.
I did the same with a memory foam mattress to replace the cushions in the forepeak, but couldn't get on with the memory foam. It always seemed to want me to sleep in the same position and I move around a fair bit.

The ideal weapon for cutting thick foam is an electric carving knife, as used in a fairly posh furniture shop I worked in years ago. I didn't have one, so I used a wood saw, which was fine, but left slightly ragged edges.

A more expensive, but superb solution is to by a Octosmart matress from Dormeo, then cut it to shape with an electric carving knife and re-shape the cover to suit. Then you have a really comfy bed.

How thick does a topper need to be to be useful. I see the Ikea ones are 3.5cm or 8cm? The 3.5cm would better fit the height in the cabin but would it be worth it?
