Mine arrived promptly, 3 days via FedEx. No VAT (yet). No duty. It cost $300 plus $58 delivery. Easy Paypal transaction. Looks fine but...

I may not have researched it enough! I want to use it to provide AIS data to OpenCPN via serial RS232 to my laptop and I have a feeling it only outputs GPS data. Is this correct? Has anyone successfully shown AIS from it on CPN?

If not, and it only sends GPS data, I may keep it as a transmitter and use my existing AIS receiver (AdvanSea) to drive CPN.... but will that receiver recognise my own transmission and suppress it? It does not seem to be software configurable. Or perhaps CPN can be set up to ignore certain MMSI?

If the answer to both of these questions is NO.... anyone want to buy a brand new unused HP-33A!?

I think it only sends GPS data - certainly it's low baud rate output on mine and AIS doesn't really work low baud rate. Is the baud rate changeable on your unit?

I've looked at the usermanual and in chapter 10.4 it states you need to set the output to AIS to get the AIS data across. This will be at 38k4 speed instead of the 'classic' 4k8 baud rate.
The NMEA sentences that are issued are GGA,GSA,GSV,VTG,GLL,RMC,VDM,VDO. The first are about your position the last two are about AIS targets.
So my guess is that if you put the output in AIS mode and set your CPN in 38k4 baud mode everything should work.

Many thanks Arno, I will set it up and try it like you suggest, then report back.

Arno - thanks for thtat, indeed it works fine. One thing though - I can see my own AIS on Marinetraffic.com but not the boat name. The MMSI shows up, position and speed (ashore!) is OK but no boat name. In case you get a chance to look we are in Viveiro, Spain. The details are all entered into the Matsutec and show in the AIS setup screen, with the MMSI greyed out. Why no other info I wonder?

I had the same issue in the marina, took nearly an hour to show up full details, when moving it transmits that data much more frequently.

If the problem is the name associating to the MMSI it has no relevance if the vessel moves at all, the static data sentence containing the name is sent every six minutes regardless of movement, unlike the dynamic data, which does.

Whether the static data transmission details are added to the target data is dependent on the receiving station contributing to Marinetraffic and they may not be static data synchronised for some period because of the infrequent transmission rate. Sometimes the contributing stations are single channel receivers that take their time to synchronise.
