I would use masking tape. You may find the 'crepe paper' tape has some risk of bleeding under the edges, there is better quality stuff eg at

Whatever you do, don't leave the tape on for more than a day as its a ****** to remove. The longer you leave it the more it sticks. When the paint is touch dry should be OK.

the cream coloured masking tape must be removed within 24 hours. there is a long-life type, coloured blue, which can be left longer but it's not easy to find in britain.

best time to remove the tape is as soon as the paint goes tacky. if you let it fully set you may tear the edge of the paintwork.

Masking tape is the way to go but don't leave it on longer than necessary - say 24 hrs or less. Homebase have a type that can stay on for 3 days. Have never used it. Should it rain while still on you will then have a difficult time removing it. The tape comes off ok but the adhesive remains.

Just finished antifouling 5 mins ago, used 1.5 inch focus economy masking as gives a good sharp edge ie the tapes very thin ,you can see through it.I used 1.5inch so you get a good surface area of adisive offsetting the fact that it,s economy stuff, must peel any masking tape when paint tacky as others have said but peel it off towards the wet paint, this prevents the new paint been drawn away leaving a reggy edge.

Did a chum's topsides yesterday and Friday with two coats of primer/undercoat before the topcoat. We peeled off the masking tape within fifteen minutes. The paint had obviously hardened. No point in leaving it longer.
