Mary Rose Museum - visiting by yacht

Best Restaurant in Gosport is the New Bengal in Stoke Road assuming you like Indian Food. It's a 5-10 minute walk from Haslar, which would be my choice having been a berth holder both there and at Premier. Royal Clarence is nice and peaceful, but a bit far from the ferry. I would not touch Gun Wharf.

Supposed to be April, they’ve been hiring the staff so fingers crossed. There’s also an “event space” next to the ship now so fewer visitor berths. I assume there will be picnic tables for outdoor dining.

Avoid Great Wall of china opposite green ferry jetty;

That's my crews favourite - as much crispy duck as you can eat plus a vase of white wine for £20

Great Wall clearly aimed at heavier crews -maybe we were expecting something more like the Good Earth fare when we tried but as said it’s certainly filling . I had thought perhaps might not be so good for young children though.

If stopping over in Gosport - also don't forget the Explosion Museum which is a lovely walk from central Gosport - also hosts the Powder Monkey Brewery now - good beers and nice looking food (haven't tried the food yet)

You can visit the dockyard for free. You have to ask and they try to upsell but they have to give you the option.

This won’t get you into the Mary rose museum. But one free day and there is plenty to see. Then pay for the attractions the next day.

Gunwharf my favourite to stay as long as you’ve booked and are not on the outside. I’m not enough of an old fart to grumble about the sounds of people having fun. I usually join them.

Follow the chain in the road to old Portsmouth to eat. Another thing to do is walk further along the chain to Southsea and take the hovercraft to Ryde.

All in all loads for kids.

As you guys seem to be au fait with Gosport, is there somewhere that way you'd recommend to spend a night? I have a meeting in Gosport at 8am and don't fancy a early morning drive...

There is a Travel lodge in Gosport town centre, yes. Would I recommend it? It's a Travel lodge in Gosport town centre...

Alverstoke is where naval officers used to live when posted to Gosport - they had small mobo at what is hornet for example. Now while I haven’t stayed there an Alverstoke hotel exists which might be a place to start if trip adviser doesn’t provide inspiration. I don’t know if any beds on board exist in Gosport marina(hardly Lymington is it) but if they do a low profile. There are no doubt places to stay in gunwharf and you could catch the Gosport ferry across. Plenty to do the night before at gunwharf .

If looking for a old pub I suspect most were bombed in Gosport -I doubt anyone would want to stay at castle tavern in Gosport or suchlike -. Only old pub I know with rooms is jolly farmer but other side of titchfield near Warsash.

I went into Gunwarf for a quick look but assumed it would be noisy overnight with all the restaurants, etc, so decided against staying there.

Is it not that bad?

Quite a number of years ago, we used to deliberately go to GWQ to savour the night life. Not any more though…
Despite the fact that I do believe the experience of others in relation to the waves/swell, I can't ‘remember’’ ever suffering myself!!!

As an aside, definitely stay longer and get the ‘access all areas’ ticket as mentioned above. ALL of the museums/exhibitions are worth a visit and will fill your (and the kids’) time.

I prefer Gosport Marina. Never had a problem with swell and facilities good. Gosport to Portsmouth ferry as mentioned quick and easy to use.

We have a mooring in the harbour but have been known to have a night or three in Gosport Marina.

Gunwharf Quays was a Gunwharf and has some hotels. The Gosport marina that isn't Haslar was built on an old victualling yard that still has all its Georgian buildings and probably has an AirBnB or two.

PS If you want to try navy life, there's a nightclub called Emma's on Gosport High Street.

Just don’t be tempted to try any of your dance moves if you’re not on the dance floor. Your feet sticking to the carpet cramps your style.

I’m sure Emma’s is more lively than Hornet for navy life but surely Tiger Tiger is still going in gunwharf to give the true spirit of Gosport on the green ferry home .
