Do these tales of woe of new boats only apply to the high end v, expensive custom stuff? Or is it the mass market stuff as well?


I've had a handful of brand new boats over the years, but only the mass market stuff, up to 37 foot windys, and they've all been fine, a few minor issues but nothing significant.

There was a lawsuit by an owner against Nordhavn for the 120 (Aurora) that he had custom built.

As a result of that link being posted I feel I have to repeat an old adage. Never believe anything you read on the internet unless you have checked it back to source and it checks out true.

Yes there was a lawsuit. Pacific Asian Enterprises (owners of the Nordhavn brand) claimed against the owner for unpaid charges due in respect of the boat. The owner counter-claimed for Breach of Contract, Breach of Warranty, and 8 claims of Intentional Misrepresentation and Negligent Misrepresentation. The owner was represented at trial by 4 attorneys, PAE was represented by a single attorney. The trial lasted 7 weeks. It was a jury trial and the jury found in PAE's favour on all claims. A new trial was denied. Then the verdict was appealed. The Court of Appeal affirmed the verdict. PAE was paid the money they were owed, a reimbursement of attorney's fees, and interest on that money while the appeal was being heard.

You can't have a more comprehensive and outright win than that.

Why should you believe me? After all I am just some bloke posting on a forum. But I can quote an unimpeachable source. At the time of posting the website seems to be having problems but I will edit this post with the correct link as soon as it is up again.

PAE has said that they do not want to take legal action against the videos (there is more than one), or the website, or anything else which attempts to resurrect the issues which were settled at the trial. They continue to sell boats and indeed there is a multi-year waiting list for most models.

When i posted that comment i wasn't taking sides, i was showing an example of a new boat that had been delivered and the customer was not happy with as per the previous conversation we were having about buying new vs old boats

We sometimes take different paths - adolescence, a degree of laziness and not understanding or believing in my own capabilities meant that I left school with very little. Things changed quickly upon joining the Navy and I subsequently did well vocationally and I addressed the academic deficit in my late 30’s, which is most definitely the hard way to do things. I think that my point would be that education is only part of the story and that is particularly the case with private education, where the friendships and networks you develop can be of equal if not greater importance than academic achievement.

Anyway, kind of back on topic, I have been browsing yachts for sale and not only are prices high but there isn’t much available so it seems that even thought sailing is a bit more complicated than mobos they are very much in demand and are selling quickly.
