Hi all

I’ve just dropped my 2019 F5 outboard off at a local service centre, I’ve been quoted £486 for the parts service and labour, this does include a water pump replacement. The base price of the service is £198. Does this seem right? I did a quick google search and this seems excessive. Here is the price break down -

Labour for service is £198.90

Service parts £177.72

Pump repair £110.22

Total £486.8

When I initially enquired about the pricing of a service I was told it is £198 all in then extra if they find anything wrong that needs to be replaced plus labour for the extra work.

Can you give me your opinion please.

Kind regards
John

I would say that £486.80 is very high if it's 5hp 4T.

Most of the service are oil changes new plug etc and inspection, and possibly a
compression test. An impeller change on the water pump would not be included in a normal outboard service.

You could always service the outboard yourself. There are lots of help on youtube and here.
Would be nice to take home and take your own time.

I think it would be difficult if the outboard has been given to the dealer . Can you retrieve it without too much aggro ? . Spliting the outboard to gain access to change the pump can be challenging . Particulary putting it back . An alternative approach could be for them just to replace the water pump and do the rest yourself.

Thanks for replying Snowgoose-1

Yes they have the outboard. I’ve discussed the option of just paying for the labour and the service parts already used. They said they could do that but would return to me in parts, though I’m not too happy with that, when I dropped it off it was in working order so I’d rather have it back how I left it.

I’ve since had a couple of quotes for a service at £190 and it includes all parts and labour.

I’ll have another chat with them on Monday, hopefully they’ve just made a mistake with the pricing.

Going forward, I will definitely service it my self, I have replaced the impeller before so know how tricky it is getting it all back together.

Hi, so this is the invoice I have received for the service, not including the pump housing replacement, please can you take a look and let me know if this is excessive, I’ve been quoted by other service providers and the average is about £190 for parts and labour.IMG_3016.jpeg

The other quotes at £190 all in sound attractive but it depends on what parts
they are replacing. I assume the above SERVICE ANNUAL £165.75 is for labour. If that is the case, the parts alone exceed £190.

Spoken today with a marine engineer of my acquaintance. His thoughts are along the lines of the following.
That’s very expensive. £190 is about right for a service and all genuine parts with Water pump kit. And it’s not like there is any extra labour because checking the Water pump is part of a service anyway, so you have to take it apart, replacing it or not. Whole service takes about an hour
