Marine gas engineers (Southampton)

Can anyone recommend a marine gas engineer that covers Southampton area (NOT Apollo Gas or anyone connected with Apollo gas)?

Have you tried Fred at Marine Systems Engineering at Ocean Quay, Southampton? I’ve used him a couple of times, not the cheapest, can talk for Britain but really knows his stuff. Last contact was about 4 years ago so sorry not sure if he is still trading.

If ‘Fred’ is AKA David at MSEL, then yes he’s still trading.

Unfortunate, but my experience with David was just the opposite!

I had a similar question to the OP earlier this year... and I posted a lot about how the Gas Safe Register should be the place to search but that it's website search was totally non-functional.

They have now fixed the search facility on their website and it will produce a surprising number of companies nearby that have boats listed as within the type of work they do..

Find or check a Gas Safe registered business - Find or check a Gas Safe registered engineer in your area who can fit, fix and service your gas appliances.

Fill in location details, then ensure the LPG fuel type is selected (not natural gas)... then in the Appliance type, select Pipework boats LPG (CORE)




Then scroll down and hit the Filter Results



Followed by the Update results button and when you go to the details of a search result, you'll see they definitely have Boats listed as well as domestic stuff.




Hope this helps - It just seems to show that there are dozens of gas people out there whose names just don't pop up on this forum (which seems to limit itself to discussion of just two or three companies based between Portsmouth and Southampton).

I believe the Apollo man with a spaniel was recommended to a previous post by our learned forumite of Poole. I haven’t yet tackled task but curious as to whether the OP had concerns which might be shared more widely

By way of update we used Owen of OW Marine today for safety check/pipe replacement and very impressed .very helpful and answered questions etc we had .he is used by a number of other Haslar boats I gathered.

+1. Owen uninstalled an old oven, put a new one in and also replaced pipework as required plus issued a safety certificate. Second time I have used Owen this year and would highly recommend him.
