For reasons best known to no-one, when I did a search of "plumbing venting device", 'Web Ferret' discovered the following link, that may be of use... I haven't studied it.

Any plumbers out there who can advise under which circumstances I need to install a separator in a pumped hot water circuit to allow venting (domestic heating).

The circuit layout I have arrived at allows a clean vertical run to an open vent over the header tank. The cold feed can run into the boiler feed in the final stretch of pipe. The old (and very messy) pipe runs didn't have one, but most modern systems seem to incorporate them. Are they just used to make up for poor design or convenience of installation.

They automatically get rid of air bubles in the heating system. This can be introduced by poor bleeding. bad pipe runs and sometimes the incoming water can be aeriated. They certainly work very well. I fitted one in a previous house about 15 years ago as they were in vogue at that time. I was recomended to fit one when installing the system. It certainly seemed to make sense to fit one at that time.

in the pipes: we had constant rumblings in the pipes and radiators needed bleeding regularly as a result of air sucked in (i still don't know where it came from). i fitted an air eliminator and within 5 secs the problem was cured for ever!

incidentally i now have the same problem on the boat: air gets into the fridge cooling pump and the watermaker pump causing both to stop working so i'm designing a reservoir with air vent to prevent it. in this case the air is from wave action, imagine not being able to use a watermaker at sea in more than F2!

As a plumber by trade I would recommend you fit a seperator especially if youare currently experiencing air and noise in your pipes. E-Mail me if you require any further advice.
