marine alternators

what exacly is a "marine" alternator ? Apart from the £400 difference in cost , whats the difference from a "standard" alternator ????

Alternators for marine use are spark protected, and have insulated ground terminals.

If you can somehow cross-reference the part number and manufacturer, then it is sometimes possible to buy the correct unit from a "non marine" source and save quite a bit.

e.g. the alternator for a KAD32 is actually a Valeo A13N234 with some green paint on it.

Aftermarket (non original) unit is always another option:

A few years ago I remember lanerboy buying an alternator from a well known Aftermarket VP supplier , it didn't do the job then after my comment on here I ended up with a solicitors letter .
Be careful where you buy these units from .

I'm also told a similar unit fitted some Peugeot/ Citroen engines .
