Marinas closing to visitors?

In light of this thread, and thinking ahead that by next weekend we could be in FULL lockdown, I went down to the boat today. Essentially preparing her for the next few months - assuming I can't get out to her (she's on a mid stream pile mooring). All the lines and fenders were secure, I topped up the dehumidifier crystals and checked on the solar panel. All good. She is still sort of "winterised" ie sails etc at home, so she should be fine for a while.

Was a real tonic being on the water and away from the virus news for a few hours. I'd hoped the boat would be my sanctuary through this challenging time so I hope we can still sail. I didn't come into contact with ANYONE or ANYTHING on my way. Only inflating my own paddleboard to get out there ;-)

Post this in the nicest way possible,
Matt your kidding your self like many others ,
If you think you can isolate yourself for long periods of times ,
Forget the fact that you drive yourself mad , there only so much TV and internet you can do, soon or later you going to have to get off and make contract with others , food, water, batteries dying, leak, fuel, gas the list is never ending .
What happen if you become ill or break your leg , you won't be able to use your paddle board.
We are self sufficient on our boat other then for food and when we cruising we stock up for a week at a time but we still end up going a shore to pick the odd thing up,
Just one week shopping take up a lot of space, just think how much you need to stock for a month, and maybe a lot longer the way things are going.
We are on lock down and have been for 11 days now , we still can go to the shop but only one person, we now and then talk to others over the radio or mange a chat a little while we on the way to the showers while they in there cockpit,
And although we still keeping our pecker up you can see it starting to get to everyone,
The worst part is no one know how long this is going to go on for .

Believe me the best place to self isolate is in the comfort of your own home .

perhaps I didn’t make myself clear? Not intending to self isolate on the boat. I went to the boat to check on her, assuming I WONT be able to get down there once the country goes on lockdown.

Err...I just checked the monthly rate for my boat if I overstay next weekend.....£790 for 28 days!

I'm out of there. I'll be out of work by next weekend and need that like a hole in the head.

If the marina charges you visitors rates for an extended period whilst in lock down they are profiteering in a crisis and you should use media like this to name and shame the directors/owners ( after trying hard to negotiate a better deal and making your intentions clear in advance)

That’s a good point and I may be pointing out the worst case scenario with the fees.

A Govt bulletin last night makes it clear that travelling to second homes, caravans, and campsites or similar whether for holiday or self isolation is not regarded as essential travel. I think we can assume the 'or similar' will include marinas and boatyards when it becomes law. The object is to avoid overloading local services, as already seen in N Wales.

I would suggest that you offer to pay the marina the same rate you have been paying over the winter until this emergency is over. They are not going to fill the berth you vacate so would lose income if they refuse.

Premier Marinas have said that you should not relocate to your boat and should not isolate on board, unless, of course it is your primary home.

Yep. Clarence ( my marina) have said the same as Premier and are essentially closed. Went down to empty water tanks and remove perishables. AFAIK that’s this sailing season over, hope my anodes last!

I am a single-handed livaboard . I will self isolate onboard. If things get worse keep out of the showers. I am stocking up on tinned food 2 tins at a time for each item. I intend to spend this summer at anchor and sail between anchorages. I will only go to supermarkets when I have to. I can not do more than this. I do not own a house. I feel I am doing more than most. I will need food, gas, fuel at some staged. We have been asked not to be greedy and panic buy.

I think the key point is that this is your main residence so I reckon you have a good case. The only q is whether the powers that be would want you to stay in your home berth. Unsure how they would police that one. all the best.

Premier might have said it but Chi Marina was pretty busy today and a lot of the (rather elderly) people about certainly had the look of people "in the Winchester waiting for this all to blow over".

Self isolation on a boat which is your main home and people who talk about leaving the safety of their home to self isolate on their boat are very different ,
The problem you may have is if they stop all moment of vessel in which case your going to have to find a marina,
It seen you may be in a berth at the moment , you might like to think about a longer berthing contract has you in a marina which allow liveaboard, if you leave then because of new reg you are unable to stay at anchor you may find it harder to find a marina to let you live aboard ,
Even if you do manage to stay at anchor you may not be able to come ashore in. Dinghy , it may sound silly but these are not normal times, in Europe boat have been refused entry even to re fuel .
