Marina Ripoff - AGAIN!

I can't quibble with most visitors fees, the only thing that grates with me is extra charges for showers and shorepower. The amount of power a boat uses in the few hours of darkness is probably not much more than a few pence.

We went away for two weeks this summer and paid a total of about £210 and 1/4 tank of fuel and you can't take a family of five away on holiday for much less than that!

Hi Charlie. We were paying about £1800 for a marina berth for a 32'er. Limited access due to really bad silting (McMillans take note cos the number of vessels grounding on entry getting embarrasing). Have moved around the corner, Not so pretty but 24hr access, pontoon berth with water and electricity. cctv coverage and private yard. TENNER a week. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Will do me. Mike

Oh you silly, silly man Mike! you've gone and done it now!........before you can say drop anchor you will be surrounded with posh yotties from the Solent!!! Then the yard boss will take one look at that lot, and before you can say weigh anchor! (cos that's what you will be doin') he will have put the price up to £5000.year! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, there was no charge for the showers, and I don't need shore power, but they (Falmouth Marina) do have a proper chandler on site, proper old fashioned chandler, not one of your to often found swindleries!

Your point about holidaying a family of five is spot on!

Naaaaah! We've got it well sussed. Small association, members must hang underpants, socks with holes etc in prominant position in rigging, /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Also if posh yacht enters area, specially picked members lounge about pontoons picking noses and spitting in water. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifIf this doesn't have the desired effect and they land, one of our more piratical looking members will saunter down the pontoon leering at female crew members and offering to buy children/wife/pet whichever most appropriate. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Apparently been working for donkeys years. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Mike.

Haslar Marina

For three boats,

Siggy 38,
SO 452,
Bene First 47.7

Total £15000:00-ish.

Do I think it's worth it? Well I believe it's the best marina on the Solent, it works for us.

Tina and I like the Staff, they're all great. Parking is great, When the amenities are all up and working, they're good.

I know it's a business we run, but I reckon I would still use it if we only had the one.

I live on the East Coast, it would be about £180:00 a month for the Sigma up here in the canal, which is about 150 metres from the door, but I need the access to the water, and the Solent is a fantastic learning ground. I love it down there.

Sailed out of there for the last 20 odd years and it still puts a smile on my face.

Of course I would love it cheaper, but I used Ocean Village for a while, more expensive, and lousy facilities for visitors, never again, two places on the Hamble over the years, Ok but a lot happier at Haslar.

That quote of £7300 for a year is way off what it would cost if you were there for the whole year. Visitor stays for a night are always far more expensive than a pro-rata of the whole year. I suspect that could be halfed at Falmouth for a yearly berth.

I think you will find there's no waiting list at Hythe, except maybe for one or two of (the few) berths they have for larger 42' boats - it's just a myth that marina owners like to put around. In fact there were spaces available pretty well all year`. Also pricewise, for 2006, the cost of berthing our 37' boat was £5670, and a 33 footer would have been around £4000.

Someone's kidding someone!!

It does seem as though there's quite a bit of exaggeration of marina fees from the ''I've got a swinging mooring for £50 a year'' brigade. Personally, I like to know our boat and contents are watched over by CCTV and 24 hour security, and that it's safe and secure alongside a sheltered pontoon when the big storms arrive. So, whilst it costs quite a lot (£5100 at Chichester for a 14 metre berth), it's something I'm prepared to pay for.
