Yet another inflation busting hike in berthing fees just landed on my doormat from Haslar. Are other marinas taking the pi** yet again? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Of course they are taking the piss, they know that they have got you by the short and curlies /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

They will hike it up until the pips squeek as said by the MD of a well known marine development

Maybe somebody ought give his pips a squeeze? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Vote with your sails. It IS possible to leave a marina you know!

I am about to leave my favoured sailing haunt (mud berth already) of 20 odd years, due to persistant and unjustified increases in mooring fees.

Trouble is though, as long as people want and can afford to pay for all the conveniences of marina berthing, Marinas are going to get away with charging what they like.

Also, and yes this is rather stating the obvious, as long as people have fin keeled boats, they will mostly need Marinas?

Anyway, what's all the fuss about? MOST people that own posh large yachts, come from the financially better off sector of society, and can afford to pay marina charges.

I mean, if you buy yourself a 45 foot Benny or some such, don't you cost in the berthing??

As to somebodies comment about voting with your sails? There probably isn't much point really, as you will probably be just jumping out of the frying pan etc.

Marina berthing is in high demand, and at some marinas they have a looooooong waiting list, same with deep water moorings. So I guess that posh yotties, with posh yachts will just have to take it on the chin, or down size to summat like a Leisure 17 bilge keeler! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's a hard life, and I have oooooooooodles of sympathy for folks who have to pay big fees for big yachts /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm another inhabitant of Haslar, it looks like roughly a 10% increase. I was in any case looking into moving the boat abroad. I got this reply from Carteret Marina this morning:

Bonjour,

Hello, We regret to say to you that we do not have a berth available to the port of Carteret. We currently have 1300 requests… I can to just propose you to be registered on the waiting list of the applicants of station (or pontoon). Sincere greetings.

I also have a Yacht at Haslar, and I personally believe that Haslar is the best Marina on the south coast. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I find the staff, Ben, David, Tim, Rachel, Martin, JC, The new lad with blond hair, and the night watchmen, all courteous, and that they all go beyond the call of duty. I would like to recommend to D & R that if they are going too increase their rates by ten percent, that the best investment they could do to improve their flagship marina would be to pass at least six percent of that increase to their staff as an increase in wages.

When are the higher management going to realise that the only reason that most of us enjoy Haslar, isn't because of the opening and closing of Landers, the abysmal service provided by The Light Ship, the fact that the head Honcho, James ( the rude arrogant fool that he is), ignores you when you attempt to pass the time of day with him, and that it's because of Ben and his staff go out of their way to help us, the Berth Holders. That is what they should invest our rates in, the retention of their staff. And pay for that vile rude man, James, to be sent on a lesson of manner's.

He will not speak to you unless you are a 'Name' or of some sort of standing. I feel for Alex T, one of our neighbour's, but is James going to continue to kiss arse now that Alex has no boat berthed at the marina?

I await my letter!!

Sorry Alex, I wish you a safe return, and I wish that you soon have a vessel of equal standing as you had with HB.

Met someone who keeps a 33ft-er @ Hythe - 6.5K p/a
Waiting list of 100+ boats.

I keep a 43ft boat on the East Coast - marina berth in winter, swinging mooring in summer - and pay just under 2K p/a

There ARE other places than the Solent to keep your boat in the UK.

William,

Your boasting again!!!!!

I agree though, there are other places.

But while there is a waiting list, they can charge the earth.

As a member of the RNSA, (well hubby is), I could have a swinging mooring up at Fareham Creek, but I find Haslar alot more convienient, and I have to pay for that pleasure.

I did enjoy speaking to you during the summer, when I met you on the East Coast, was it Pen Mill? OOOhhh! I still shiver when I think of that, well you know.................................. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Is there something we should know about here??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif or maybe best not!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Oh no!!!

Nothing that should be construed as anything but a chat between sailors. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif My husband was present, and Will was and is a gentleman!!!!

Re-read the last and understand your questioning.

Now go and clean your mind!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes there are, £2000.00!!!!!! Gulp! Where I am it's free! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

True, I don't have all the mod cons of a Marina, but then I don't need 'em, boat is only 100 yards from my house! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are lot of us sailors about that some of you lot would consider to be financially challenged, but that's ok, I'll bet we have just as much fun as most of you /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Still to be serious for a moment, I still think that most Marina charges are a rip off, don't matter how wealthy you are, the only exception to that, is probably the cost of visiting them? I went into Falmouth Marina for a few days back in the summer, (July it was), and they treated me very well, £20.00 per night, didn't mind that, what with all the nice facilities an all. Hang on!........£20 per night x 365 = £7300.00!!!!!!!!!!! sharp intake of breath /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Suppose I do wonder some times how I would feel about it if that mythical lottery win came in, and I could afford a bigger boat?...................

I hope I haven't given the impression that I am jealous or envious? not the case at all!..............well, maybe a tinsy bit envious, but no chagrin /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
