Hi all

Are there any regulations covering fairway widths?

Our marina is small and in the last few months, the harbour authority have let loads of boats tie up to the marina walls. There is a long waiting list for pontoons (I have a pontoon berth) and being on “the wall” is vastly cheaper than a pontoon.

Every time I go out, the fairways seem to get narrower. At one point I have half a foot either side between boats. I’m keen to raise this with the harbours dept so advice on any regulations would be helpful.

If the harbour authority is taking money off the "wall boats", then I think you might be entitled to ask to see what insurance the H A is carrying, especially in relation to obstruction of the fairway.

And loads of links to legislation, here:-

The Harbours Act 2010, Section 30 looks like a good start, but you need to check what Restricted Areas in relation to Safety of Navigation, are in place.

TYHA guidelines suggest 1.5 times the overall length of the longest boat on the fairway.

Brilliant! Thanks very much for that

"Waiting list "
How secure is your tenure ?
I mean is it sensible to poke a stick at a bear?

It’s nice until the mid life crisis boy racers tear up our little lanes :D:D:D

Perhaps you’re right. I just dont want to damage anyone’s boat. It is really tight at times

We have the same, but not so much the "fairway" but the gap between the pontoons. (3 boats in a line each side of each pontoon)

This is dealt with by the harbour etiquette of departing / arriving boats being fendered on both sides, but moored boats only being fendered on the pontoon side.

Not a big deal at all.
