Currently we are in Florida, escaping the northern cold. Not a place where I ever expected to be able to go into a marina, prices are often over $75 a night on the Eastern coast of the USA.

Much to our complete amazement we have found a marina at $350 a MONTH! That price includes electricity, water, screamingly fast wifi and even free ice! And taxes!

It's state of the art docks, even a fitted hosepipe at each stand to fill your tanks with!

Most of the other boats are big MoBo's, obviously these guys get to be wealthy by knowing where the best deal in town is!

The marina, Hammock Beach, is part of a large resort that is very obviously feeling the effects of a major recession.

What is most amazing to us is that we are paying less here than we were on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala.

Anyone know of other great deals that are coming on the market as the recession bites?

Junta de Andalusia marina prices have increased by 25 to 30 %

what!!!!!, crazy buggers, they'll have at least one less visitor this year, me!

it seems that they feel they can increase their prices to cover their increased costs and tough luck for the yachties.

When will the basic laws of economics hit these med countries, increased prices = less customers = less income.

I came out of a marina to Bruces yard in faro several years ago, then when he started getting greedy moved to a year round swinging mooring.

I must say I've always fancied Florida and then up the East coast to Canada during the hurricane season. Sounds very good...

Is that an actual increase in the base price or the removal of discounts for long stay? I'd heard the Junta were planning the latter whilst in Ayamonte, mid December. The Junta also rolled the price of electricity and water into the base after Jan 1 so they are no longer optional - based on stays in Cadiz and Barbate up to Jan 6.

On annual rate,I was told by a berthholder at Ayamonte yesterday,so may very well be removal of discount.Still hefty, though!
I should have gone to the office and got up to date info, but had to rush to catch the ferry----THAT's gone up from €1.60 to €1.70!
Glad to say that Portuguese rail still gives over-65s 50%discount!

We also found a great place in Savannah, well Wilmington Island to be precise, www.leeshoremarina.com Not as glitzy but at $9 a foot per month pretty acceptable, especially as even though it's technically in the hurricane zone a lot of insurance companies will cover that area, no idea why but seems statistically they haven't been hit for a while.

It's not glitzy like our current location but very acceptable, reasonable priced electricity, no showers etc. Placed just behind a huge supermarket and close to the centre of Savannah for sightseeing. I can highly recommend that spot too.

Seeing the prices currently being bandied around for Spain we are thinking twice about our current plans to return across the Atlantic this year......

nice to see you posting on here again Gerry. Have to say that we enjoyed your time here immensely. Great to have a good old British cruising couple around to have afternoon tea and a good natter with.
At least Wilmington Island kept you out of too much trouble.
We did look at the Mafia Palace in Palm Coast, and whilst Theresa thought it would be a good place with out any distractions(meaning I could work more and socialize less), I thought it would end up being a bit boring.
Perhaps that is what she was getting at.
Anyhoo, it was wonderful to meet you guys and hopefully we can keep in touch. You should hopefully be safe in Bermuda by now and refettling Katinka for the leg to the Azores.

Fair Winds

Just to add to Gerry's information, there is also another marina nearby where we are based, and we are able to offer some assistance to cruisers stopping locally. We are in www.sailharbormarina.com which is a working boat yard with a 50ton lift and labour at hand. Transients are approximately $11 per month, WiFi(free), toilets and showers, washers and dryers($1.50 each), are available. Electric and water is included. Ourselves, we have 2 vehicles and are willing to help out if required. We have a large ketch on one of the river pontoons and visitors(hic!) are welcome.

The increase is due to the removal of discounts plus the compulsory charge for water and electricity plus the application of an environmental tax although the last is only some Euros 0.35 per day. Having said that, the cost per day is still cheaper than many alternatives in this area especially during the expensive summer period.
