Most difficult to get hold of on the VHF - Brighton

They seem to have cleaned up their act a little bit...we went there a couple of weekends ago and the VHF was answered almost instantly. I suppose it helped that it was pretty empty.

On our last trip a couple of years ago we spent a good hour trying to raise them before just barging into the marina and tying up anyway.

Worst tides across the entrance - Cuxhaven. Spirng ebb of over 5 knots.

Worst published information - Cuxhaven. Having fought the cross current we ran aground just inside the entrance. Harbour master said we should have kept to port "Everyone knows that!", so it wasn't necessary to chart it or put it in the pilot book.

Most unreasonable harbour master - Cuxhaven. Marina was 20% full. We were the only arrival all day on a dark winter night. Couldnt raise anyone on VHF. After an all day sail we tied up. He then appeared and told us to move the boat as he was keeping that space in case a bigger boat arrived later. We told him to bog off and went to the bar.

Best beer -Cuxhaven. After all that anything was going to be memorable.

Worst for swell ~ mooring = Haslar visitors pontoon.
Worst for swell ~ refulling = Gosport Marina Fuel Berth

You can get inside on the Gosport fuel berth and the swell is far less there than the outside - why am I telling you lot this? There'll be no space there for me now.

I would suggest you take them as being rude, gruff etc etc because you don't understand them. They are ex fishermen, no doubt with a great deal of sea experience, who probably look down on you as amateurs in plastic boats with poor seamanship standards, a superior attitude & to much money.

I quite often see their point of view.

I thought that about fisher man too.

That was until we were rammed by a fishing boat in Bembridge. The guy driving the boat seemd to just have an 'aim and go' approach to boat movements. He managed to dig a hole in the side of our hull as he crash landed against us, and while he was trying to get off us he gouged our hull once more.

Since then I have been a bit wary of fishermen.

More recently, I observed a small fishing boat that had refuelled try to get off the pontoon and end up pinned against the bridge with the tide. Whilst I recognise that it is a tricky pontoon to get off, it just reminded me that some fishermen may be no better at boat handling than the rest of us.

Cheers

Yep, thats what I do. If it's a bit crowded inside I just use the blue lights for instant access!:D

Scariest approach at low water with a swesterly-Porto Solente- A Plethora of rafted Sunsail yachts means nowhere to stop, turn or keep clear of outward bound vessels. Cant imagine what its like on a sunday afternoon.
Also noisiest/**** music award from same Sunsail club house funtime every evening.

Nice showers though

Mankiest showers and laundry. QAB Plymouth.

Most often broken showers-(No hot water) -Brighton

Friendliest staff. Falmouth

Ferry gliding award. ( Needed to reverse into the fuel dock) Swanwick at Bursledon

Mankiest showers and laundry. QAB Plymouth.

We stopped there about 10 years ago and the showers were the pits back then. Thought they'd been upgraded since.

Reminds me that when we got back home, incidentally after my only previous Scilly stay, opened a letter from QAB saying that they'd had a complaint from the boat next to us that we'd damaged his hull with our Avon dinghy. Complete rubbish, we didn't have an engine on it. Left a bit of a sour taste. After a phone call to them I never heard any more about it.
