I had one of those 3.5 mariners, probably one of the best & most reliable small outboards ever made. The water intake tube behind the prop simply cools the exhaust as the water is blasted into it by the propellor. The power head is air cooled. Timing is fixed & points gap was a piece of swan vestas box thickness. Sold it at a boat jumble to a bloke whose knuckles dragged on the ground, "Does it run?" he asked, I gave it a pull & second go it went. if it was you apologies if it wouldnt start on a boat!
