Manual for older Mariner 3.5 outboard

I had one of those 3.5 mariners, probably one of the best & most reliable small outboards ever made. The water intake tube behind the prop simply cools the exhaust as the water is blasted into it by the propellor. The power head is air cooled. Timing is fixed & points gap was a piece of swan vestas box thickness. Sold it at a boat jumble to a bloke whose knuckles dragged on the ground, "Does it run?" he asked, I gave it a pull & second go it went. if it was you apologies if it wouldnt start on a boat!

I agree with Vic about getting it in the water!

Just in case you are not aware, it is the long shaft version built in 1975. The only difference I found between the Mariner and Yamaha branded items was that the Mariner did not have a drain pushbutton on the carb bowl which makes it more important to run the carb dry at shut down.

If you need spares (I have a few) and/or more paperwork please PM.

Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob - I'm on the hunt for manuals etc for the Yamaha/Mariner 3.5hp ac 642 air cooled 2 stroke - I know this post is 5yrs old... but just checking in case you still have any paperwork for the outboard? I'm looking a owners manual & service/workshop manual. I have a parts list I found online but that's all. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Ricky

Hi, I still have the 10 hour engine and the workshop manual. The first is easy to find in the garage but the manual would need to be hunted down after all these years. In any case, it is a rather bulky paper document (i.e. not soft copy). My attempts to make a soft copy produced a 16M incomplete word document (and growing). If you can't get a hard copy from BHG or elsewhere, I may be able to do something (in slow time) - 16M is too big for my 'out' email .
I have attached soft copies of the operator and maintenance info in sofar as I have them .
[All my spares have gone to another chap who is struggling to get his running reliably]
Cheers
Bob

Thanks Bob - you're a lifesaver! I've spent every evening over the past week trawling through the internet and haven't seen a single manual online apart from parts list which are plentiful. There are so many posts over the past 10/15yrs requesting manuals but none have ever been made available. So this is super helpful! You have helped people the world over.

I would be keen to get the workshop manual if possible - even whatever you have currently on the document. Maybe if you could half the document into 2 parts - creating 2 smaller documents, it would be able to be emailed? I'd really appreciate whatever you have. My email address is rickywright78 AT gmail.com

Thanks again!!!

I a bit confused over how the air intake works - the engine I bought didn't have any 'air filter' or anything stopping dirt/debris being pulled directly into the carb - this area is circled in red. Then there is a rectangular box (shown in photo) that looks like the air filter and it was situated to the left of the air intake (space highlighted in yellow) but it isn't attached or connected in any way to the carb? It just seems to sit there and do nothing??? Any thoughts on how this is meant to work? I don't know if something is missing or if the previous owner put it together incorrectly. Cheers, Ricky

Here's an extract from the overhaul manual - I only seem to remeber a box
"A. Removing the carburettor
1. Remove two lower cowls and the spark plug cover.
2. Remove the ‘silencer’ mounting screws, and remove the silencer (Fig. 4-1-2) by removing the starter link rod and the fuel change lever from the joint bushing. (behind the silencer).
3 . Remove the throttle wire.
4, Remove the air cleaner assembly (1 Hex nut and two crosshead screws).
5. Disconnect the fuel pipe on the tank side of the fuel cock which should be placed in the "STOP" position.
Remove the carburettor (2 Hex nuts – 10mm)."4_1_2Fig.jpg

I've made a pdf of the document as I left it many years ago. That reduced the size to 1Mish - bit of a dogs dinner. Sent in email

Hi Bob,

just traded in one of these as I'm now on a very shallow tidal estuary and the o/b's I had were too long!!
.. not run it yet, been filling/drilling/tapping holes for the carry arm and de/re/greasing the main pivot.
Its missing the left hand lower cover i- f you've got one hanging around ? , and a home made petrol cap.

Henryp & eaz20065,
My life has been very off-normal since October last year and cannot remember if I sent eaz20065 the pdf. But, I do know that I haven't a spare tank cap or any covers.

(I still have the little used complete outboard in the garage and it will be sold sometime soon).
Cheers
Bob

Email me the details if you like.
I can't seem to be able to PM you on here, perhaps because I don't often post anything.

Best regards

Hi Bob,

I’ve just registered on this forum to see if you still have that small Mariner and want to sell it. Please drop me a PM.

Thanks.

Dear All,
I have been a little pre-occupied on family matters recently and I may have missed some requests for the documents I have. Apologies.
PM me if you have been missed.

Also, I have now sold my engine and no longer have any spares.
Cheers
Bob

Hi Guys, can I get a copy of the service manual please.
I have a bit of a strange issue in that the engine starts fine, but as soon as I take the choke off it splitters and dies, if I try to rev it it dies. I have cleaned the carb twice and replaced the gasket behind the carb in case it was an air leak.
It a very low use engine that sat in a shed of 15 years.
Any ideas?
