During a wander along the exposed moorings at Shaldon/Teignmouth today, among the several rather tidy boats dried out on the gravel were a couple which would have given any insurer an unpleasant shock -

The hefty MacGregor 26 'Moonshine' was secured by a tatty and frayed single line, which appeared to be down to just two strands here and there....

Just a few yards away, another nice wee boat is well-secured to its mooring chain....

....which is about to give up the ghost and part!

:(

Of course try to warn the owners or those responsible. However you may be able to monitor both the worn rope and the worn chain to find just how long they last. As said the chain may last a long time 6 months maybe (just a guess) the rope I don't know.
Perhaps if you felt generous and have old rope to spare you could tie both up in a back up manner. Let us know what happens. olewill

oldbilbo,

Shaldon is one of my all time favourite places and I have vague ideas of retiring there, just as a forewarning !

The frayed line on the MacGregor is surely just Neptune and Darwin working hand in hand ?

In reality I'd have tried if there was a cockpit locker open with some spare line to put on for now as backup, and contacted whoever runs the moorings; leaving a note even in a waterproof bag is not that reliable as some owners don't visit their boats for months for various reasons.

I don't think that chain was in immediate danger of parting, but again someone needs to be told.

Similarly on a wander at Ravenglass tidal moorings seemed a bit feeble. OK, the boats weren't worth a lot, but more than these bits of string.

I like that inset picture in the last one. How did you do it please ? Expensive software or just plain skill ?

Can't remember really..... Photoshop. Freehand selection > copy > reduce image size > paste > Select layer > Ctrl/nudge arrow to reduce selection to pasted image > apply border to selection and fill border with yellow > apply line with arrowhead.

probably :D
