There seems to be a little thread drift here.
I nominate the sail.
The sail might not beat the wheel but it must be a close second
I am surprised no one beat me to it!
And possibly the reason I marked my post as "Not necessarilt non boaty"
The only thhing in my opinion that has longer legs than the sail is a nuclear sub. And that is far more essoteric!!!!!!!!!
But. ( and I do not wish to detract from the spirit of brainstorming) it is quite High-tech.
I certainly (as a sailor) would not knock the sail as I personally would propose mankinds greatest ACHIEVEMENT as the moon shot ( I have been to the Johnston Space Centre in Houston) as the most amazing thing that man has (technologically) achieved.
When I consider what these guys did with JFK's initial mandate, my mind melts with the thought of the utter complexity of their task!!!!!!!!!!
Mankind: Future or what???????? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cameron
Warning: Switched to the single malt!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Democracy is a bit like communism in one respect - nice ideas in theory, but when they are put into practice, you seem to end up with some form of dictatorship.
Yep - the Internal Combustion Engine. It is also designated (and rightly so) as "man's favourite toy" and it has held this designation for a very long time. Even you yotties can't escape it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
However, I do like shipswoofy's nomination of the transistor. That's cool /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Although the wheel, the sail, and the axle are very good choices, I would nominate alcohol as my choice. It has contributed enormously to the advance of society through the ages, as to make it, water had to be boiled, thus saving lots of lives. Also, I have seen it stated that Man stopped being nomadic due to the need to remain in one place long enough to harvest the cereals for his beer to be brewed properly; and this was a VERY serious suggestion from Prof Forgothisnamenow. So there you have it; beer, wine, spirits, all the finest Mankind had ever come up with /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. But only imho
The EMP (electromagnetic pulse) generator - OK it needs thick copper wire and high explosives to be invented first but it allows all electronic equipment to be destroyed without hurting people or property.
Needs upgrading to deal with barking dogs, preferably by turning their owners into something useful like a Lava Lamp (not a Rabid Wabbid) but otherwise should be stocked by Tescos in various sizes from Mobile Phone to Inland Revenue
Re: Mankind\'s greatest invention (NB) Not Necessarily Boat
I think The Internet has a lot to be considered for as man greatest invention, Just look at us, we would not be having this discussion if it was not here.
It connects people all over the world, knocks down barriers and adds to the economy of country's, It as informs the world of disasters and where help is needed from the rest of the world to survive.
the list is endless.
Yes Cameron.....I think that concludes the thread mate....Booze is mans greatest invention HIC! I tell you what though, what a smashing drop of stuff that Glefiddich 18 year single malt is eh?
The semi conductor has got to be on any short list, along with wheels and electricity. It has revolutionalised life over the past 40 years, as it appears in so many different devices. For example
Computers
Domestic Appliances
Clocks and Watches
Mobile pbones
Healthcare equipment
All on board electronics - (to make it a boaty thread!)
etc
etc

I agree however the computer makes the home almost quiet now when the females can now do all their blethering on the internet chat lines . So instead of the click , click of the knitting needles you now hear the click click of the key board.
Live Television signals - not the idiot programming and mindless wasteland that TV consists of, but the technology that allows one to actually see in real-time, a physical image from around the corner or around the world is, to me, a mind-boggling achievement.
