Man dies on Isles of Scilly after Border Agency raid on moored yacht

Then again, I know SWMBO has palpitations when we pass a police car, and the only thing she's guilty of is tediously unambitious parking/manoeuvering.

Different context, but we often pass near the Navy base at Coulport, Loch Long. For those who don't know it, this is where nuclear submarines get loaded with nuclear missiles, and there is an exclusion zone about half-way across the Loch. The exclusion zone is patrolled by police boats - I assume MOD police, but I'm not sure. Patrolled may be rather a strong term - it involves blasting along to the up-tide end of the area, then drifting down tide until it's time to repeat!

Well, my wife is Hong Kong Chinese, so we often joke about them keeping an eye on us! I'm careful to avoid the exclusion zone, but I'm quite sure that if I were to cross the line, all that would happen would be for the patrol vessel to come up and warn me off. And that would only be because they must have the most tedious job in the whole Clyde! Loch Long is fairly quiet - beautiful scenery, but surrounded by steep hills, so it isn't the best place to go sailing, and I guess that during the week they go for hours without seeing anything moving on the water.

Where do you hang out? I don't even see that many dressed as you describe in police stations, let alone in the street! (I'm not saying there aren't any, but just not that high in proportion to those wearing the "regular" uniform)

Probably depends which force, as they seem to make these decisions separately.

The mean streets of Surrey where the local police have gone from the traditional white shirt with tie to tough-guy all black outfits with stab vests and multiple gadgets.

"Poor bloke. And a Dutchman, why should UKBA want anything to do with him?

"Fat ignorant civil servant in a nice tight black uniform had too much testosterone for breakfast, and freaked the guy out"

"We will probably never know. "

"Apparently drugs with a street value of up to 20 million quid have been found onboard, which might explain the dive."

We do know now.......Innocent man hounded by police eh !........

200 kg of cocaine. No innocent sailor here! UKBA must have had their eye on this one.

No the old problem, engine failure, towed in by RNLI, when SWMBO worked at Mylor they stored the drug boats, it was the most common reason that the CG searched the boat in the first place.

So if you plan to do drug running fit a new engine.

Although in this poor chap's case it was actually failed rigging that caused him a problem.

What????? First the nasty UKBF in their really scary black clothes are nasty to a sailor and then scare him into jumping off his mast. Then to cover up how nasty they've been they then tow the yacht out of the harbour so that they can plant some drugs on board to try and hide the fact that they were nasty!

Thought I'd get it in before some of the paranoid on here did.

FWIW I couldn't care less if I was boarded by MIB from any agency or whether or not they were polite and subservient to me because I pay there wages (yawn). I've nothing to fear from them. I've got a backbone, thick skin and in any event the inter personal skills not to rub them up the wrong way. They are welcome to visit anytime.

They must though find it quite satisfying winding up some of the complete ********s they must come across from time to time. Good luck to them.

Who thinks they've got a choice what uniform they wear? It'll be whatever a store keeping bean counter can get cheapest. I suspect a black wicking shirt is considerably cheaper than a white shirt and tie.

Well, I've been sailing up and down the east coast of Scotland from Wick to Newcastle for the last 6 years or so and I can honestly say I've never even SEEN the UKBA, never mind being boarded by them.

Perhaps we're just too scary for them up here <tongue in cheek smiley>

.

This is an interesting catch. I presume that if he had not run into trouble he would have got away with it. Was this a random search or did the RNLI see something or some other tip off?

Actually I wonder if the UKBA even knew there was anything on board. I find it strange that he didn't ditch the load before he called for help or even scuttle the boat and claim he was sunk by a whale.

A yacht where a skipper plunged to his death during a raid by border officials had drugs with a street value of about £20m on board.

The Border Force raided the Windrose on Monday after it was towed into the Isles of Scilly.

The skipper, believed to be a 62-year-old Dutch national, fell from the ship's mast during the raid.

A search of the yacht found 200kgs (440lbs) of what was believed to be cocaine, the Border Force said.
