Does anyone happen to know the specification/part number for an immersion heater element fitted in a calorifier aboard an early 00's Malo?

I may able to help,Send a photo and i will see if its the same as mine.M36

I have these pictures though I'm not sure they are much help. It's a friend's boat who is currently off-piste in the Med whom I'm trying to help out so I can't easily get better piccies.

Sort of related Question?....

Can you leave the immersion "on" continuously. I'm on a pile mooring but used to leave the immersion permanently on, on the basis that I was only ever connected to 240v for about 8 hrs at a time. However after we burnt out the immersion at home (forgot to switch it off) it made me wonder whether I should be going through the faff of turning it off when the water has heated up?

as long as the thermostat on the heater is operating correctly there's no reason not to leave it turned on continuously. I always make sure that I have water pressure in the calorifier (and therefore calorifier full of water) before I turn the element on though otherwise it might overheat and fail.

Given that it is an Isotemp calorifier the fact that it is in a Malo is irrelevant. Isotemp is a well known maker and many chandlers or mail order suppliers such as ASAP stock spares. Google and you will get plenty of sources. Equally pretty sure your friend will find spares available through local chandlers.

A word of caution, my own boat has a calorifier that takes an element with the same thread size (2.25inch BSP?) as UK domestic immersion heaters. When I needed to replace mine I had to bring one from the UK as all the ones available in Turkey were much smaller.

Yes but presumably there are different types/sizes of Isotemp calorifier which need different sizes/KW rating of element, hence reference to Malo.

Just give ASAP a call. The type will be on the calorifier body. Doubt they will recognise it by knowing it is in a Malo. It is a generic calorifier fitted to many boats as OE. Would guess there are only a very limited number of choices, probably 2 ratings and 2 sizes.

Only three things matter, thread size, overall length and wattage. The latter is not critical, and getting a slightly lower wattage than the original will just mean that it takes a bit longer to heat a full tank. I suggest just draining the tank, removing the old heater and taking it to try and match it. Hopefully it won't have been put in with adhesive sealant like my old one, which needed heating with a blowlamp to get it out.

I swapped out an Isotemp calorifier for a Surecal one after about five years, most of which was spent battling to keep it from leaking. The element was on a thin oval stainless steel end plate which was clamped by a single bolt and sealed by a neoprene gasket, when the boat was subjected to a shock vertical load, (tide rip or tug wash anything reasonably violent) the whip action of the element caused the plate to slice through the edge of the gasket. Polished the edges, renewed the gasket several times, used Sikaflex etc but it repeated every time. Isotemps are typical Italian engineering, nice looking, shiny, but very thin metal, the IoW made Surecal replacement with copper tank and traditional screw in element never gave any trouble. However perhaps a Malo would have a bigger stronger version than a Finngulf.

There are thee thermistors fitted on our 36 one is a re-settable one. have you checked mains right up to the immersion? I have heard that the immersion is no longer available and a friend with a 98/99 Malo 36 has had to replace the complete tank .

Thanks for that information; I will relay onward.

Check the resistance of the element. I did it on mine and discovered it had not failed. Then I saw the small reset button, about the size of a match head......

Turned out that the engine/calorifier takes the temperature above the immerser trip setting. Fortunately, the setting could be adjusted upwards.

Good luck.
