Stage one of the move to the Med is under way. I have booked the flights for a weekend recce of the marinas in Mallorca.

I have enjoyed reading the threads on here talking about Club del Mar in Palma and Cala D'or so those two are on the list. I am meeting Nick Barke from BCU in Cala D'Or for a chat.

Then a look at Alcudia and Pollensa. From my "google" research I think Alcudia is in pole position but I am keeping an open mind.

Would any residents in the above marinas like to add further to the advice already on this forum as to why theirs is the best?

What should I do when I get to the marina? Just turn up in the office and say "Hello, I'd like to bring my boat here. How much will it cost?" or should I contact them first?

I'd do some proper research about the wind in Alcudia. We were only there a few days, but the sea breeze was very strong every day, and speaking to a couple of other boats they were saying it's often like that.

Agree with NickH. The north side of the island is most definitely the windier and when the NW mistral blows, youre stuck in port. Don't want to overstate the case but it is a factor. Having said that, Alcudia is a great bucket and spade place for kids and it has an excellent restaurant called Mecon Dulcinea with superb beef

Yes best way to find a berth is to turn up and ask for one. This shows that you are serious. In Alcudia there is a guy called Barry Lawrence http://www.mallorcacruising.com/ who is very helpful and should be able to help in any discussions about berths with the marina or may even be able to offer berths himself. He can also help with maintenance. Worth a chat with him

Did you mean Alcudia, Nick or were you thinking of Pollensa?
Alcudiamar (the marina in Alcudia) is very sheltered.
We are off there on Tuesday for about a week.

EDIT - and the Meson Dulcinea - Yum Yum

I meant the NE tip of the island with regard to local cruising and anchoring, rather than a specific marina. The evenings and early mornings were calm, but during the day the wind blew off the sea at F5 and I got the impression that this is not unusual, maybe even the norm.

I did say I was only there a few days though, so i'm just suggesting some more research.

Fully agree re Meson Dulcinea, great place

OK
I see what you mean and that part of the Baldricks does seem to get the tail end of the Mistrals.

Having said that, we did a month in Alcudia a couple of years ago (the whole of June) and we did manage to get out on anchor - even did a mini cruise from there round Menorca.

Next week, we might do a day trip over to Citudella from Alcudia - weather depending - I'll post some pics if we go.

Race force bike bus has just been to collect our tri kit. It was ram jammed with bikes and other competitors kit, heading for alcudia.

Have you ruled out the other main marinas ? Andratx, puerto portals, Club nautico santa ponsa, port adriano etc?

We're in the north of the island. We love it in the north but when the wind blows which is a prevailing north wind, my god the north of the island gets a hammering, you can get a huge sea state for a week and go nowhere. Which you would think nothing of going down the se of the island. Alcudia is about an hour from the airport.

In a nutshell, thats pretty much why in 5 seasons in Majorca we stayed down south in Palma. Not only is it the most sheltered part of the island but its only 10-15mins from the airport

Well, not ruled them out but we are only there for the weekend so I figured we wouldn't have time to see more than 4 places.

You could probably do the 4 I mentioned in the same morning as they're all in the same south West corner of the island.

I'm up early to get the 7 am flight for a long weekend there now.

Good luck with the marina tour on Mallorca. We very much enjoyed that part of the Med-move adventure last Autumn. If you have time for a coffee stop in Cala d'Or let me know (assuming we are here of course!) This is our first season here, so still lots to learn ourselves, but happy to share what we have discovered about the pros and cons so far.

The boat is in Port Adriano, but we're staying in our apartment about 15 minutes drive away.

The weather is currently overcast, but 18c. The sun is just starting to break through, and the sea is flat calm,no wind at all.

IMHO, you should be very selective about your berth if you managed to get one in Andratx. The bay is very exposed to strong westerlies - you would need to be right inside the marina - not on their visitors berths near the travel hoist. But I don't think you will get one on there anyway so if you are short of time, best to stick to your list.

From what you have said, Palma might be the better option for your family - Personally, Palma is too commercial for me.

I'll post some pics around Alcudia next week if you are interested.
The town is building up for their Iron Man event so it will be starting to get busy.

Yup, its not often but once in a while a westerly gale causes havoc in Andraitx http://www.yachtforums.com/threads/big-storm-in-port-andratx-palma.10203/ The marina has a breakwater protecting it but all the same its not a place you'd want to be in these conditions. Having said that, Andraitx was one of our favourite destinations in Majorca with a huge choice of restaurants and bars as well as being in a very attractive location.

We have had a boat in alcudia for ten years 03-13 and have just bought another which we keep there we find it an excellent base to cruise from with great Calas and easy access to menorca .
If you go into the office Malen is the lady to see she will be able to tell you excactly what berths are available .
With regards the local restaurants meson dulcinea is certainly over priced and over rated there are much better to be discovered
