He died a couple of weeks ago on a sailing/climbing trip in the Orkneys with his wife

I saw the announcement in The Times the day it happened. The couple sounded like a game old pair.

Bumped into him once, but he was well known in Scottish mountaineering circles. Thought his wife was amazing in rowing back to the yacht and sailing it out until the VHF signal was unimpeded enough to enable a Mayday to be transmitted

A real character I believe. I had some email exchange with him a few years ago after repeating the ascent of one of the North east Greenland peaks he ascended (Petermanns Bjerg). We did it the easy way flying in by ski plane, they used small boats and foot.
