I sold my last boat in October last year due to the simple fact of getting so fed up of going down to Weymouth for the past 4 years and when there the weather was poor and the wind blowing so we could hardly ever go out and when we did the sea was freezing so no good for swimming.

Well we have just come back from a week in Majorca and visited lots of marinas to look at the boats and while there the sea was flat calm every day and so warm I spent ages swimming and snorkelling in just a pair of shorts. This has really got me thinking about boats again something I told myself I was done with, Around every corner there was a delightful little cove full of all sorts of different sized boats.

Does anyone on here berth in Majorca or does anyone know what prices they charge to berth over there just curious but feel it may be an itch I may have to scratch at some point.

Cheers

LB

When you have looked at the prices in Mallorca, have a look at mainland Spain.
Has lots of the same benefits of berthing in Mallorca - at a fraction of the price.
We base ourselves in Sant Carles (partly owned by MDL so there is a vibrant British community)
Sant Carles is only 110 miles from Mallorca, (98 to Ibiza) so an easy run to those fab places you been seeing.
Also being on mainland Spain, most of us drive our cars out to the boats as well as flying cheap airlines.
Generally, the weather is way way better than you have experienced in the UK - as indeed it is in Mallorca.
If you are interested in Sant Carles, why not sign up to our berth holders forum and see what we are all saying.
Registration is free - the forum is run by berth holders for berth holders.
The forum address is www.scmchat.com

I didn't think it would be long before you got itchy feet again Shawn, like you I am boat less at the moment and to be very honest I might not bother again here in the UK, this summer must have been so far the worst on record , I just cannot get motivated to buy another . As you can take your holidays when you like I'd seriously be looking over there though the pound to euro hasn't recovered yet I'm sure it will do.

Thanks Mike I am registered with your marina forum but since selling my boat last year I have not visited it but I have read some great stories on the Saint Carles forum will pop back on there and have a read. Makes sense what you say about mainland Spain but it was just the secluded bays that got my attention in Majorca and although we love boating we are not keen on cruising that much more about trundling out the marina to the bay around the corner and dropping anchor for the day personally thats what makes Majorca so appealing to us.

Yep - makes sense.
But July and Aug in the Baldricks can be very busy.
Remember that Sant Carles has that fantastic lagoon right outside the marina.
7 miles long, a mile and a half wide and 6m deep.
We all often just pop out - drop the hook and watch the sun set over the Montsia (our local mountain range) sipping cheap cava and munching on fresh prawns.
I know its not the same as those idyllic bays in Mallorca but, as I say, you might struggle to find a place to anchor.

Did exactly the same as you and sold my boat due to the weather in the UK. Contemplating buying another boat and mooring in Cala D'or which is lovely and easily reachable from Palma airport, about 50 mins travelling. Several members from this forum are now based there and there is a couple of threads about this subject just recently.

We spent 5 seasons in Majorca and I can tell you that those delightful secluded coves will be jam packed in the July/August high season so the Balearics is not a place you go boating if you want to avoid the crowds. Its also not a cheap place to berth your boat. For example a 15m berth is probably going to cost you €10-20k pa depending where you go. Places like Portals, Andraitx, Santa Ponsa and Cala d'Or will probably be more expensive with the Palma marinas and Alcudia being a bit cheaper. Yes of course the weather is generally much warmer and more settled than the UK but be aware that Menorca and N Majorca are open to the NW mistral wind which can often blow quite strong

We berthed in Club de Mar marina in Palma and for us that was a good compromise. Only 15mins from the airport and close to all the amenities of Palma itself when we didn't feel like boating. Several good anchorages within 1 hour's run at 20kts and Palma bay is probably the most sheltered coastline on the island in terms of wind

the anchorages here are busy in July and August but in the 10 years we have been here we have always been able to find space, usually by arriving nice and early and picking the best spot! There is such a huge choice that you can always find somewhere without travelling far.

Marinas are more expensive than elsewhere but with the choice of beautiful calas on the doorstep I suppose you get what you pay for.

If you are on a budget then the best option is mainland spain and then 4 months in Mallorca etc.
You can do this for £10,000 all in a year for a 48 footer and includes all your moorings, fuel and berths but you have to move to the mainland.

The weather is so much better and the coves are busy in places but I have never had a problem with getting into a cove and there are loads to chose from so you will never regret it, just the fact you put up with the poor UK weather for so long!

Also I am a big fan of Denia its much closer and as or even cheaper than St Carlos! and a lot better connected via airports and bus etc.

I've had a boat in majorca for the last 16 years or so. There no getting away from the fact that moorings on the island are expensive.approx 3k pa for a 7m, more than double this for a 10m.

Weather wise, from may to November it's almost guaranteed that you'll get good boating weather on any given weekend. And water temp ranges from 18c in early may to 28c in August, and back down to 18c in October.

Regarding busy bays in July and August, yes they can get busy, but then I've never not managed to get a spot, but I guess it depends on the size of your boat,I only have a 25 foot windy,so it's never a problem. Mind you everyone appears to get to the bays late, so if you get there before 11am you should be fine.

I don't know what size boat you used to own, but you could always keep mooring costs down by getting a smallish dayboat, it's what I do, and works fine. Depends what you want from boating I suppose.

Ps -eljay, I think you anchored next to me in portals vells the other day.

If it was last Thursday it was one of the rare days that the sun didn't shine ?

some great replies as usual I am possibly regretting selling my old boat now Sealine S42 on shafts with air con genny passerelle etc would have been a great boat in the med from what I saw last week. Having read the posts I think Saint Carles would possibly be the best bet with a trip to Majorca for a week or so in the 6 weeks holls as my cream on the pie

something else to chuck in the mix. If you are still tied to work/ school etc why not charter, boats.co.uk have a lovely targa 47 in Cala Dor, its about 800 to 1000 a day which sounds a lot, but if you do real maths (not man maths) on boat ownership`it´s not bad. I was looking at renting in and around Croatia even cheaper and seems to be quite a selection of boats too. No servicing hassles, antifouling, repairs etc, just enjoy and then give it back. Might be a sensible way to get a good boat fix especially early September.
PS I´m not connected in anyway , I just worked out recently what I spend on boats, how much time fixing them and how much time actually out and about. FYI don´t do this if you already own a boat

Good advice Kashurst. Try it before you buy it. If in Cala D'Or try Cala Mondrago Which the Times described as one of the top 5 bays worlwide and dozens more as you motor up the SE coast. Marina Cala D'Or always very accommodating. Yes its not the cheapest place to go boating but every cent great value plus sun and crystal green waters.
