Some advice please.

What would be the best way to sail a small yacht from Medeira back to the Uk.

Via Azores, or Across to the Med, and up the French canals.
and what time of year would you recommend. I was thinking July/August.

Part of me would love to waste time in the French canals. But I would need to leave earlier.

Thanks

The vega draws around 1.2 m so the canals are a possibility, better to get into the med early and avoid the peak season prices and the crowds, we have met plenty of people during the summer months heading North and coast hopping their way back to GB or Northern Europe via Northern Spain and Brittany though it is against the predominant winds, personally Id do the canals and drag the trip out as long as I could :-)

Hi Al

I returned to the UK from the Canaries via Madeira and the Azores.

which are worth a visit,

You could then either do the Azores to north spain in approx 5 days with a good weather window, then cross Biscay back to UK
or take you chances with the weather for the approx 10 day sail back

I think Webcraft of this forum returned to uk in a Albin Vega send him a PM

.
Hi Al,

We sailed our Albin Vega 'Fairwinds' back to the UK from Madeira via the Azores and Galicia.

Taking this route the longest leg was Terceira to Camarinas, 850nm. We then crossed Biscay from Camarinas to Waterford, passing close by the Scillies.

We had plenty of time in hand, so waited for a favourable forecast as far ahead as practicable.

We left Madeira at the end of May and made Santa Maria in the Azores in a little under 5 days.

Santa Maria now has a marina and so is a much more comfortable stopover than when we were there. The Azores are well worth a visit - you can read a bit about them in our blog.

Terceira to Camarinas was eight and a half days, 9th - 17th July.

You can read the log of the trip from Madeira here: http://www.znoy8.co.uk/azores1.html

If you have the time, I'd head for The Azores. Must be worth a visit, and nice to tick it off the list. I've always been on some kind of mental deadline when coming that way, so never considered heading out there :(

The Azores are lovely. Will be passing through next year. last time we left Terceira for SW tip of Ireland approximately 1100 nm. We had a following F8 for about 36 hours but no issue when behind you and off the continental shelf. Took us 8 days. Cruising back along the southern Irish coast was nice after long ocean passages.
