All boats have a bilge but, whereas an AWB may sometimes have liquid in her bilges (spilt capuccino, lapsang souchong and the like) only an MAB will have real Bilgewater.

Perhaps the committee would produce a guide so that novices could easily tell which definition their boat falls under?

The real MAB owner knows that Fray Bentos tinnies don't have 'labels',

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Well if I'd known that I could have been suspected as a closet MAB man!

BTW, Morrissons in Poole had BOGOF on Fray Bentos Pies this week. Let's see if we can create a stampede.

I will admit about 40 years ago to liking the occasional S & K pudding, but never the pies, the puddings were probably a forerunner to the 'boil in a bag' concept.

Sadly we do keep a single tin of Fray Bentos Corned Beef as an on board standby for Corned Beef Hash. Does that qualify for Associate Membership?

Surely a MAB has to have in her bilge, as well as copious quantities of bilgewater..
.. five tins, missing their labels, probably containing peach slices, but possibly carrots
.. three large rusty bolts (various diameters) and several nuts with different threads
.. six old pennies and a thruppenny bit
.. an rum bottle one third full of some amber coloured liquid
.. a (no longer) adjustable spanner
and a pair of very oily underpants

When I acquired Indigo she had almost all those things in her bilge excepting underpants and peaches. The rum was actually gin (believed to be) but was never tested for authenticity. In addition, there were the remains of a pocket torch (the batteries seem to have dissolved), a very large (and subsequently very useful) screwdriver and about an inch and half of silt.

In fairness to the previous owner, those things could only be excavated after I had removed the engine for replacement.

The silt will almost certainly have been formed from degraded peaches and underpants, so you clearly have the n'est pas ultra of MAB's.

Bilge inventory

We found a tin of bilge polish and a roll of polish cloth, does that count?

We were left a Negrita rum, a Remy Martin and a Bombay Saphire gin in the main bulkhead bar and some cooking brandy in the table bar, all labels of course intact. What very nice people!

We also inherited (non-bilge) a 3/4 full bottle of Cutty Sark whisky (is it still made?) plus a useful quantity of Canada Dry ginger pop to go with it, the mother of all corkscrews, and a designer umbrella in full working order.

Just what is a designer umbrella??

Re: Bilge inventory

Umbrella eh? No Navy Officers I hope.

Cutty Sark used to be sold as a cheapo brand here I think but is still sold and as a premium brand in the USA. Weird folks our Colonial cousins. Canada Dry Ginger is the pits in my book, at least the USA version, ugh!

Re: Bilge inventory

In our case a designer umbrella is a one made with dark brown cloth, with a discreet pattern made up of the design house initials, printed in dull gold. DG, I think the initials are.

No naval officer (unless that's where the smell of rotten eggs came from) but the brolly is surprisingly useful in three roles. Firstly, if the boat is parked stern-to a rainy wind, it can be poked out of the companion way, opened and lashed into position with a sail tie to keep rain out of the boat, but let air in. So much nicer than battening hatches. Secondly, for runs ashore in inclement weather, it's much more civilised than togging-up in full oilies. Thirdly - but this requires sunshine and so is an unusual use – it makes an admirable parasol when reading in the cockpit.

Re: Bilge inventory

It must be an MAB thing, we use a golfing size umbrella as a forehatch cover in the rain or windscoop in the summer. The RN officer left on the bicycle long ago. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
