Lundy Island

There are basically two sides of the island to anchore depending on the wind.
In a SW anchor on the East of the island near the south end - this is really the only access point to the island and is where the ferries anchor.

It is good anchoring ground and never crowded. Take your rib to go onot the isalnd. yes there is a pub - after a bit of a walk up the hill. Also a shop etc. Lundy has holiday cottages on it.

There are no charges.

If the wind is blowing from the east into this anchorage - it can cut up rough. Also watch the overfalls well charted around the tips of the island. The seals are mainly on the East side further up Northwards from the anchorage.

There are some really nice bays on the west of the island when the wind allows you to anchor there but access onto the isalnd can involve some rock climbing!

Where would you be coming from?

I often do Lundy on the way to Padstow or sometimes just as a trip itself.

It has the first marine sanctuary in the UK - it actually has a coral reef. the water is very clear. I do not dive but there is lots of diving goes on there.

Its about 90 minutes from Swansea - maybe two hours in my new slower boat.

You do have to have the right wind conditions. If you want to meet up there this summer, I would look forward to it.

I have just finished a video I am publishing soon on the forum, it starts with a shot of Lundy as we passed it on the way to Padstow.

Hi,
Lundy is a great overnight anchorage. It is a spectacular place and hard to believe it is only 18 Nm from the Devon coast it is so different. I live in Croyde, 18 Nm east and visit regularly by sail. If the wind has any east in it you will get a bumpy night, period. Anything else is quiet and comfortable. This applies to the main anchorage in the SE corner. As mentioned in another of the replies, the holding is good, it just depends on the gimbles on your stove as to wether you will be able to brew tea still. More seriously, in spite of the rediculous tidal range, the bottom is quite steep-to and you will not have to anchor too far out. If you are coming from the north you will probably arrive near low tide anyway. Maybe I speak as a sailing man there. The pub is great, but odd in that it actually does close at 11, but you can buy 27 beers at 10.55 and stay to finish them. I say odd as there is no law of any kind there. The west coast does have some good anchorages, principally Jenny's Cove, but access to the island is very difficult for non-mountain goats and the west coast is scary in any conditions to say the least. a really wonderful quick visit is to be had by stopping on the far NW corner by the N Light. You can creep right in, anchoor, row ashore to a set of steps made to salvage the remains of some Naval cock-up years ago, and dash up to the light. I say dash as you need to do this only at low water and in ABSOLUTELY flat conditions. Even then there will still be a bit of swell from somewhere. I am not particularly recommending this, but it is a good kick.
Lastly, Lundy is fabulous.

Without looking on a chart I have no idea of the distance from watchet to lundy How many nm is it from you
The reason I ask is because I fancy going there now It takes about 2 hours from portishead to watchet
are there any good spots around watchet have you ever been into porlock and stayed in the pool there
regards
mark

Maybe we could have a bristol channel meet there in the summer, i quite fancy stopping on lundy - i was going to use it as a stop off point on my way to padstow.

Oi. Dont have me, as a Bristol channelite,. Past through the place a few times, but never found the desire to stay. Think the only time I saw Lundy, was when I diverted from Padstow in a F7 and stuck a quick course in for Swansea. Nearly obliterated Lundy as it was in the way. Passed a couple of yachts scurrying behind Lundy for cover on the way.

Yeah - maybe a meeting somewhere would be a good idea! Lundy is good, if there is a pub there - i quite like cardif (penarth or cardif side) and i can get there in 1 tide...

Any other ideas?

I would be up for a Lundy Meet of the BCF's (Bristol Channel Forumites).

Lundy is very weather dependendent so we should maybe have an alternayive venue for poorer weather.

ChrisChevvy and Pegasus could come as well i would think.

Think i will ask Keith for a seperate meeting forum, we can all discuss it there...
but i think cardif bay yacht club would be a good 2nd choice.

I would be up for a meet as well. If it's as far as Lundy, I will need an escort to make sure I don't get into trouble.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sami,
Lundy is about 50 miles from Watchet.
I've not had the time to go anywhere from Watchet as yet, since relocating the boat from the Medway some three years ago, life has got in the way of boating so the only place we have been is Penarth. This year has been spent bringing her back up to scratch. Now I'm rarin' to go!!!
I've seen the pool at Porlock from shoreside and it looks very tight, I'm sure other forumites have experience of it though.
