Having looked for these two products I notice that the carbon monoxide detector sold by at least one of the online chandlers is the same as is available in my local hardware store but rather more expensive. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where LPG detectors might be available more cheaply than in the chandlers? Also any knowledge / experience on whether these items can /should be specialist marine products?
Thanks in advance for any info.

there must be something better

than the cr*p you buy at the chandlers. i bought a plastimo twin-sensor lpg detector and as instructed put one in the gas locker and the other just above the galley sole. a few drops of water ran down the cupboard onto the sensor and the whole shooting match is knackered, can't even use the other sensor.

I have a Canary gas alarm that appears to work very well and is quite sensitive. I haven't got the sensor wet mind so not sure if that would cause such a problem.

The unit was very reasonable priced too - you can get them from Yachtbits

Cheapest LPG alarm...

You'll probably find that the cheapest 12-volt LPG alarm will be in a caravan accessory shop, and will be about £25. It won't have a remote sensor, so you'd need to mount the whole thing in your bilges. That needn't necessarily be a problem, because it will have to be well out of the way of any water to avoid detector failure.

If you want a remote detector, the Canary unit is about the cheapest. Pilot alarms are also good products. Both Canary and Pilot allow you to connect a solenoid valve to the alarm, so the gas can automatically be switched off if there's a leak.

I suppose it depends on how complicated you want the system to be. For example large computer rooms can have a system which sniffs the air; the room is covered by a network of pipes with small holes and the air is drawn in, travels to and over a central sensor. It should be possible to feed a couple of pipes from the bottom of the bilge and gas locker to an airtight box with the alarm inside (in a dry place) and then suck the air though it either by a chimney type arrangement or a fan. I think you would have to study the physics to make sure enough gas would be drawn through to set off the alarm though...
