I have a 35 year old Pintail and I am in the process of tarting up the interior varnish work, however quite a few of todays gloss varnish products are very high gloss. I do not wish to go down the satin/rubbed effect road, so any suggestions on a varnish with a more moderate shine??

try mixing the matt / satin with full gloss

Just redone all the interior Teak of my boat with International 'Woodskin' (ex Sikkens Cetrol) and very pleased with it, it is not clear and has a slight tint which also covers any mismatch/dings etc, finish is between Gloss and satin.

I actually used a 4" roller (sponge type) to put it on and you will get a load of tiny air bubbles, but then just flattened off with a 2" brush with great results.

I have just been touching up with International Woodskin, got it over my hands at the moment as I am making washboards and touching up the Avon transom (get a coat on before breakfast and you can get another coat on in the evening ;). Easy stuff to use with a brush, no bubbles it's like painting oil!

Still wet, one end stuck in heater, needs two more coats.

Try Skippers water based satin clear 'varnish'. Its virtually zero odour, dries fast and I've used it inside and out with no problems at all. I suspect it will be a lot easier to sand down then PU varnishes.

I've used Epifanes Satin & pleased with the results on the interior of my Vega, used two coats, it's not shiny at all which is what I was after. Others will tell you there's no need to pay for "premium" varnishes...
