Looks like the red diesel question may be resolved

My heating fuel is red-- 32nd gasoil I believe. I use a lot more in my boiler than I ever do in my boat. What will happen to the duty & VAT on that?
I an pretty sure that it will work in my Volvo engine because I have used it in my dumpers OK & both are based on a Perkins engine. I expect that It would be OK in a Beta engine running on a Kubota block as well.
 
Re the E10 petrol, there is a site on the net, E10.fr where you can check if your old car is suitable. Mrs. DW loves her old Twingo and it says that E10 is not suitable for it, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. What the site does say, is E10 is not suitable for outboard engines and garden equipement. One of our local s/markets has a 95 lead free pump without bio. so I use that for the little engines.
So if next year there is only E10 and what is now called Super, have to use the latter for outboards?

These discussions remind me of the panic in some quarters prior to 4 star petrol being discontinued. If modern cars will run on a fuel, I will be very surprised if far simpler engines such as strimmers and outboards won't.

Local Brit here had an old pilot boat with an 8cyl Gardner lump. He just called up the local heating co and they backed up to the dock and offloaded a couple of tonnes. Nobody blinked. Saved €1,400. over the cost of pump road fuel.
 
Beta engines are Kubota engines, used globally in tractors, diggers, and generators.

They are designed to run on just about anything you put in them.

I don't think the problem is the engine, it's the storage of fuel in marina tanks and onboard pleasure boats in combination with FAME blending.
I have had a Beta engine running on EU fuel since 2006. But since the marine bug problem came into focus around 2010 – 2012, practically all diesel sold to boaters here (at marinas etc) have been FAME-free, that is 100 percent fossil based.
In the last few years however biodiesel based on the HVO process has become available, so this is now blended into road diesel, along with FAME to reach increasing climate targets. HVO diesel is chemically very much like fossil diesel and does not give the bug problems associated with FAME.
It might be that the HVO process will replace much of the FAME-production in the future when it comes to increasing the bio content in diesel, if so the bug problem would gradually go away.
 
If you include other vehicles about two months ago. One that like a boat often does had stood idle for a while.
It's very rare in cars, despite there being millions of diesel cars in the UK. Many of which have steel tanks.
I believe the main reason is that diesel vehicles tend not to have badly designed tanks which leave water in the bottom.
Any water which gets into a car tank tends to be be isolated in the filter PDQ.
Also some people ask for trouble with boats, storing fuel much longer than is prudent. That is a bad idea for other reasons than bug growth.

And when did you last hear of a bug problem in a car?
On the other hand, when did you last hear of a car with fuel sitting around in its tanks for months before use? My local narrow gauge railway (Leadhills and Wanlockhead) were having huge problems with fuel in their diesel locomotives, which get very intermittent use, until I advised them to clean out all their tanks (storage and loco) and treated them to a nice big bottle of Fuel Set. No issues since.

It's a useful idea, but that lists isn't as detailed as it might be. For example, I just looked up "Citroen" and it says "All models since 1st January 2000". It seems unlikely that everything before then is unsuitable. On my trips abroad with the DS I steer clear of E10 out of general caution, which means that in the Netherlands I have to buy spectacularly expensive E5 - around €1.90 per litre.

I suspect that I am being overcautious, and that carburettor cars will run fine on anything which goes bang as long as the seals are compatible. Older electronically controlled engines may find it new fuels more confusing.

Diesel, red or white, is 35 second. Heating oil, is 28 second. Most domestic oil fired boilers use 28 second, although some do use diesel. I would not run a modern diesel engine on 28 second heating oil.

The gvmt can increase the duty and VAT on 35 second oil and leave 28 second where it is, thus not causing a problem for the majority of oil fred boiler owners.

Local supplier accidentally delivered heating oil into a boat, I seem to remember the cure was to add paraffin???
