All the hardworking folks at the EA, tired after their day off because of the bad weather, are having a day out at the rowing museum.

Are we paying for this?

I don't begrudge the lock staff a get together and a decent meal. They're not exactly overpaid and rolling in perks.
If it was a weekend away for the top brass at HQ, that would be a different matter.

It's not a jolly rather one of the annual staff team meetings that were introduced in 2011. These meetings are just like those we have all sat through, corporate stuff, death by powerpoint, history repeating itself, strategy, 'the way forward' nonsense, elf n safety. Most of the staff would prefer to be elsewhere, painting bollards or pruning roses but the minigemint think its a good idea to drag them all to a central location and bore them to death for half a day.

Don't worry about how it's funded, it's no different to any other corporate management meeting that we've all had to endure, and just the same, largely pointless.

Clickbait !

You have just ruined a perfectly good rant which could have been kept going with ill informed comments for ages and ages .

This is the internet, can we keep any facts and sensible constructive comment to an absolute minimum please .

Yeah you are right. Management here organise equally pointless events.

Sorry OG, just keeping it real as the yoof say.

But to keep on the rant theme, I forgot to mention that the 'top brass' in Waterways did have a posh hotel away day and overnight with dinner at Oakley Court Hotel, near Windsor 5 years ago. There was much discussion about the 'way forward' and 'new ways of working' and 'strategic planning' and 'manpower forecasting' with lots of action points on post-it notes and bits of flip chart paper. All paid for on a government purchase card. Lovely dinner and my suite was big enough to play 5-a-side in.

You'll be relieved to hear that none of the thinking was ever put into action as it fell in the 'too difficult' box, involved change and actually doing something. Normal service has continued ever since, albeit with more full-time managers and fewer temporary lock staff in the summer.

The EA's mantra will always be: 'Process Not Outcomes!'
