Hi Folks,

Looking to do a little sailing so I thought I would check here to see if anyone can assist. Living in North Wales but willing to travel.

Have never sailed before but have just finished my Merchant Navy cadetship so I now have my OOW Unlimited COC. If all goes to plan I will be joining my first vessel as 3/O at the end of January. During the cadetship I picked up almost 14 months sea time.

As a poor Cadet I've never been able to save for any of the RYA courses so if you have an opportunity where I could help out for free it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

Congrats on getting your OOW Unlimited. I used to live in North Wales & sail out of Conwy & Holyhead. Just visit the local Marinas & Yacht Clubs in Conwy, Deganwy, Holyhead, Port Dinorwic, Beaumaris, etc, tell them your story and I'm sure someone would be glad to have a professional navigator and seaman onboard.

As an ex MN engineer officer and now master of my own vessel (allbeit only 22ft) I would seriously counsel against letting everyone know that you are newly qualified!!

Get yourself around any clubs local to you - there are uually people looking for a hand moving boats and if you ask nicely you will usually find someone willing to take you out for a sail! :) Ideally, if you can, haul yourself somewhere warm and do it in comfort!!!!!!

Be keen, but not TOO keen! Be helpful, but not TOO helpful - know your limitations, be safe and get out there on whatever boats you can and enjoy it!

BTW if you're ever in Cardiff you are welcome to come for a sail!

Regards
