Looking for a Replacement Mast for Westerly Centaur in East/South Ireland

Hi everyone,

As you may have seen from my previous posts, I lost my mast between Milford Haven and Arklow (now my home port). After taking some time to repair the damage, I’m now looking for a replacement mast.

It’s for a Westerly Centaur, with approximate dimensions of about 9.8–10.5 m in length (around 32–34 ft), masthead rig, with a standard aluminium section.

I know there are shipbreakers in England with old Westerlys, but transport costs would be more than I can reasonably afford at the moment (PhD student budget…). So I’m hoping to find something in eastern or southern Ireland.

Does anyone know of any boat breakers or yards in Ireland that might have old masts, or places where Westerlys have been scrapped? If anyone has gone through replacing one themselves, I’d really appreciate hearing how you approached it.

Thanks a lot for any help!

I’ve seen that there are quite a few masts available in Southampton, but I’m not sure how to organise transport to Ireland. Does anyone have experience with this or any advice on the best way to handle it?

Put the mast on the roof of a van with a trailer, that would likley give you the length without needing to chop it in half.
Yeah the point is that I learnd driving in Germany and Im not a very confident driver either and for shure not confident enough to handel a Vehicle of 10 m lenght in the english road system :)

Actually visit as many of the local marinas and yacht clubs and boatyards as you can . Speak to the people who work in the yards. Put adverts on noticeboards in the clubhouses, and where possible on their websites.

There are clubs in Skerries, Rogerstown, 2 in Howth, Sutton, Poolbeg & Ringsend Basin, 4+ in Dun Laoghaire, Bray, Greystones, Wicklow, & Arklow.

Try the Westerly owners association.

The more "feelers" you put out the greater your chances of getting a lead.

The moment your mast is more than 200 metres away from your boat you have the same problem. Transporting it. That problem is largely no different then for a small journey or a big journey.
There are several centaur masts available that have been pointed out to you. You need to find a friend or a company who can sort your transport problem.
Renting a van with a friend seems the easiest way.
